I love the male. My brother-in-law once had the largest waterfowl farm in the USA and had some there. It was amazing to watch the male do his mating dance. He looked like his neck would surely break!

thanks, everyone! yeah, the male is the more colorful, but that's pretty much universal in the bird world. the females are drab and plain, to make it easier for them to blend in when sitting on their eggs. the female redwinged blackbird, for instance, looks like a little, dappled brown sparrow. female ducks are typically brown and plain, while the males have iridescent plumage. i guess having the female be the colorful, "pretty" one is just a human thing... ;)

The real reason is that the female haven't learned about makeup.

I live on Dexter Creek in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and in spring have a camo tent with hidden camera holes to shoot from. We got Wood Ducks, Mergansers, Common Mergansers, Mallards, Blue Heron, so much fun photographing them. Use a Canon and a 100-400 4.5-5.6 L IS and drive my wife crazy with pictures. Spreading corn on grass in spring brings them in closer. ( And Duck House )
