Heck, I'll send ya a box full if ya like!!

Thanks. That is very kind of you. Though I appreciate the offer, I'd prefer to use mine. I know what I did wrong in the vast majority of the cases.

A lot of that keeping files goes back to my film days. I still use film. If there was a bad shot in the middle of a strip of film, removing it meant having two smaller strips of film to manage. It was easier to leave the bad photo in place. It's a habit and I'm not intending on changing it.

Thanks for suggestion.

I have a good filing system which I have used since my film days and still works for me.

having recently taken a lot more photos at one event than I usually do got me to wondering how other people coped with large quantities and what their work flow was and whether anyone had a 'magic system' or whether it is just time and patience?

I have seen posts on UHH where people say they have taken many hundreds - perhaps as many as 1000 - pictures in one session.

Recently I went to a steam fair for the first time and ended up with 400 pictures - which is much more than I usually take at once.

This set me thinking - just how do members sort their many hundreds of pictures without getting cross-eyed and losing the will to live?

What is your system and workflow for such a situation?

C:\my pictures\2013\events\steamfair\8-18-13\ then dump the whole load there and create more subfolders to divide it into different subject matters if there are any to divide them into. Delete total crap that you know are unusable before dividing them up. Done... and easy to find when the time comes.

I agree with everything stated here, Lightroom to organize (you can try a 30 day trial for free), and delete, delete, delete. If your iffy, or like a pic enough to keep it but don't intend to post process much or at all, nor print it big enough for the side of a bus, keep the jpeg and dump the raw file.

Now more importantly, what is a steam fair and how do I find one?!?

Brixham Steam Fair in Devon UK has just celebrated its 25th anniversary. Basically, it is a gathering of steam powered engines and equipment that enthusiasts have saved and rebuilt. The show has grown over the years and includes cars, lorries and tractors.

Every year there is a challenge to the engine drivers to navigate a steep hill in Brixham with a very sharp hairpin bend at the top.
