That's a function of you focus priority in the camera not the lens. You lens has a 4-5 year warranty.

If it hasn't locked focus it will not shoot.

I don't use the hood...I am new and maybe I didn't realize the importance of it. I will read upon that if that is possibility. It would make sense because I didn't have any problems with the other two lens that I used. And it worked out of the direct sunlight. (newbie's don't they just kill you) My point and shoot never cared about a hood :)
This is not addressing your original problem, but is concerning the lens hood.
In my opinion, the lens hood serves 3 purposes.
1. Lens protection. Anything you bang the front of your lens into will hit the hood first, offering a first line of protection. Of course it make the lens length longer thus easier to bump into things. I would still go with the hood.
2. Will cut down or eliminate lens flare in direct sunlight. Flare is caused by light directly entering the lens, sun, bulbs, arc welder etc. the effects of flare can vary from distinct circles in the photo to a general loss of contrast. Use a hood.
3. Makes your lens look way bigger, and more impressive. That is the look you are going for. Use a hood

If you have data displayed on your camera's LCD displays, your camera is ON. If not and you have a charged battery, try removing and reinstalling the battery. I just had this happen with a new battery which was defective. Removing & reinstalling the battery fixed the problem until the camera was turn off of a long time.
If you have a good display, as others have said, check that the lens is properly mounted. Look at the camera's LCD to see if the f stop (aperture) is properly displayed. If the f stop is "0" (zero), I'd suspect dirty camera and/or lens contacts. I think these contacts have a very thin metallic coating, so clean carefully.
Thank you!!! everyone for such helpful hints and tips at fixing my lense problem. It's nice to hear from those with a little more experience with photography!!!
This has excellent feed backs. I got a lot of info. Thanks guys :-P :-P :-P
The problem could be heat induced. High heat will expand metal components and if the camera gets heat soaked there could be some mechanical interference generated. Try keeping the lens and camera in an insulated camera bag.

Do you have a good hood on that lens, are you using filters that could be causing your malfunction?
What does a lens hood have to do with this problem?

Direct sunlight on the lens element or the filter he said he had on could make for some glare the camera could not process!

Not unless it was pointed at the sun each and every time he's tried and I doubt that very much. His problem lies somewhere else.
Check to make sure all of the pins on the lens mount are springing back for contacting in the camera flange. Clean not only the pins but the contacts on the camera flange.

I'm just saying that the same situation is not coming into play each and every time. End of discussion.
