A few times now I have gone to take pictures and my Nikon 55-300 lens will not work. It is like the camera is not turned on. I have taken it off and reattached it and it still doesn't work. I then change out the lens to my kit lens and the camera works. When I get home... and I go to check it out the 55-300 works just fine. I have noticed it malfunctions when I am in direct sunlight mid-day. Could it be a setting that I am missing on my camera that would be causing the problem and not the lens? It is just odd to me that it works at times. My camera is a Nikon D3100.
Have you cleaned the contacts? It sounds as if your electric contacts are dirty. As it's just that lens it sounds as if they need to be checked. There are several lessons about how to do it on youtube.

VJs, are you shooting auto? Anytime your camera is either way overexposed, or way under, your camera will not shoot. It would have to be on manual. Try shooting on auto ISO on Tv priority. Your camera will adjust itself to a lot of situations and still shoot. Just a guess. SS
Do you have a good hood on that lens, are you using filters that could be causing your malfunction?
Is the lens firmly attached? Usually the camera won't recognize a lens if it is not properly attached to the body. That has happened to me once, and it took me a while until I figured it out.
If it hasn't locked focus it will not shoot.
I don't use the hood...I am new and maybe I didn't realize the importance of it. I will read upon that if that is possibility. It would make sense because I didn't have any problems with the other two lens that I used. And it worked out of the direct sunlight. (newbie's don't they just kill you) My point and shoot never cared about a hood :)

If the camera is set to manual focus then it could, assuming that's the problem.
thanks I will remember that...

And if that was the problem ?? ...just think of how much cooler you will look with a few extra inches....on the lens, I mean ! lol
Try manual settings in direct sunlight, ISO 100, f8 and 1/1000 shutter speed and check if it will behave normal. Try with autofocus and manual focus. Maybe you have been using some wrong settings. If this test gives the expected results, then it is probably not the lens or the camera, but you or your settings.
And by the way, are you sure that when you attach your lens it clicks - is attached properly?

Used mine in all setting and conditions and never had a problem...with hood and without.
I would say it's dirty contacts...had this problem with one of my lenses, just turned the camera off (D90) and removed it, put it back on, turned the camera on and it was fine.
I know :) I have the red Nikon D3100 camera which is already an eye catcher...what was I thinking.
Oh wow...I do use a filter on that lens. I will consider that.
