I have never been to N.Y. and everything you say about it is true but I still like it. It is what it is Bmac.

Here I was editing photos (or deleting them) and participating in the forum between edits when I came across this picture of 42nd Street between 7th & 8th Avenue's.

It's colorful, loud, but also very busy. The eyes have no place to rest, no focal point, but dart from one place to another, the billboards, the lights, the small shapes of people, the yellow cab speeding by. But.........that's exactly what New York City is, busy, noisy, loud and disorienting. So why not post it and see what you all think?

C&C desired and requested, let me have two full barrels if you wish, this photo may deserve it. :-D

Settings were: ISO 640, 48mm, f/4.8, 1/80 second

For me it works fine because "Thats Life"

Very well done Bmac, I like this a lot. I think the eye is contained with in the shot and takes it all in, and does not want to leave.

Thanks Gregory, appreciate your comments. NYC is certainly different from your peaceful and serene daily beach walk. :-D

There is a german word, gestalt, that would aptly describe this image. The definition is a configuration or pattern of elements so unified as a whole that it cannot be described merely as a sum of its parts. The image as a whole has immediate impact while offering many points of interest within. Manhattan is energetic, garish, and interesting. You've certainly captured that. I like it very much.

Thank you for the detailed C&C. :)

I think it is an excellent shot; would've been nice to wait a split second more to see more of the cab. Lots of color, action, and I like that it does break a few of the photographic rules....well, bends them anyway!! And there does seem to be rule of thirds being utilized as well.

Thank you very much. That's certainly a good idea regarding the cab but it was difficult to encompass it all in the viewfinder at the time. Would have been nice, though. :)

Rules are funny things. I learned early that they can be broken if you know them in the first place. There are rules, like the rule of thirds and the rule of odds that are hard to get away with, but if done properly, even they can be broken.
As for this shot, I really don't see the rule breaking you do. I think it's a nice shot that captures NYC pretty well. It's colorful and for me captures the spirit of the place. I think it's a nice shot.
Sorry for not giving you both barrels! Hope I didn't let you down! :D

Thanks for the detailed comment s2hrts. Rules to me are guidelines, if one wishes to go outside those guidelines it's fine, but I think it takes more thought. The rule I broke in this image was to have no defined subject or focal point for the eyes to come to rest upon. 8-)

Thanks AloCarlos, I also have taken many photos in that area which have been tossed in the wastebasket and I too will have to reconsider. Perhaps the reason is that to folks who live in NY the scene depicted is common, while to many on the forum it is not. 8-)
