Sorry, I missed the earlier comment about the foreground stuff.
Didn't read every post closely enough.

The second one wins in color, but the first one has a superior composition. The framing provided by the shrubbery make it a great shot. If you want to pop the colors a bit to equal the second shot, that is an easy task in Photoshop.

I had been here earlier in the day at about 1pm, but the light just wasn't right. So I returned at dusk, while the sun was setting in the west. Now these were taken just minutes apart, but you can see the difference in the light against the trees.

For about 20 minutes after the sun goes down there is whats called sweet light. This is a wonderful time to photograph. Sweet light also is good before sunrise also. Here is an example of sweet light shot in Lundy canyon near Mono Lake in California. I shot this image 20 minutes after the sun went down. There were 20 other photographers photographing in the canyon that day but they all left when the sun started to set, my friend alan and I were alone to enjoy the wonderful light.

Jon, These are beautiful images; thank you for posting them. What struck me was the fact that you made the effort to return when the light was right. How many times have we all seen a great subject, recognized the fact that the light was not right and not made the effort to be there when it was. Good on you!

Intresting shot, Bravo. Bv
Just proves that the time of day is the most important
thing one must consider before Subject and Camera.

rdbroman the difference in light shade was a result of the sun moving below some cloud cover on the western side of the valley. In the few minutes it took me to walk from one position image #1 to the position to image #2 it changed that much as the sun was setting. Minutes can make a difference as seen here. #2 is my favorite as well.

Thanks
Jon

I agree the second one is the winner, nice crisp focus, color and the reflection is great, I think you and your camera did a great job, glad you returned later in the day

The trees certainly stand out better in the second; however, nobody has commented on what happened to the light on the mountain tops and clouds, which has a golden glow in the first shot, and is lost in the second.
