I am thinking about buying Topaz Lens Effects while it is on sale. I currently have PSE10 and will probably upgrade when 12 comes out. My question is...What happens to add-ons when you upgrade software? Thanks in advance...

At worst, you'll have to re-associate Topaz with the new version of PSE.
I just upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 8. I am faced with having to redownload programs and plugins. I have run into a problem with my Topaz plugins. They won't download. I'm getting an error message and Topaz doesn't have an answer. I have a friend who's a so-called expert who will look at it on Wednesday. I'll let you know if he can figure out the problem.
I didn't have any problem redownloading my Nik plugins.

And that error message would be....?????
I don't understand why you would have to download Topaz or Nik again, unless it was to get a newer version.
Upgrading your operating system shouldn't have wiped out your hard drive.
Or, do you mean that you upgraded your COMPUTER to a Win8 machine?
Sorry, I have a new computer with a new operating system. I get an error message that says "Error opening file for writing"

Thanks Wall-E. I appreciate the help.
Thanks DebAnn...I'll keep you posted...
This is the reason why I always "Save" any program that I download to a special folder on one of my external drives. Then I open the download and extract the files to install. That way you will always have the file available should you upgrade your system or the program becomes corrupt.

I agree, I always backup my downloads and keys onto an external hard drive.
I have 2 external hard drives, and have been called a bit OCD about backing things up. However, right now should my PC go corrupt I still have all of my programs.
I backup my downloads to a DVD so I have them if I need to re-install
I agree, that's a good idea and usually when you download a program, you get an option to "run" or "save" the download. But in the case of Topaz you don't get that screen. It just pops up a screen that tells you where it's going to install it.
These are plugins for Photoshop, of course. I haven't been able to get past that screen without getting an error message.

That is interesting Using Firefox I get that option

Excuse me I was distracted for a moment by HopesFate looking at me with big blue eyes saying in a low Bacall voice,, "I have two external drives ... " direct from film noir...I will put that in my notes for a new short story!!!
Anyway! get back on track Don.... PS and PSE will automatically search and recognize Topaz. Paintshop pro, requires you go into preferences and tell it where Topaz is in the Program Files. If you lose your Topaz, there is an automatic area at the Topaz Labs Support that gives the S# to you.
You said you were thinking about buying Topaz... well do not think about it.... JUST DO IT... TOPAZ IS FANTASTIC MAGIC INDEED... I have had topaz for 5 years starting with Adjust... now have the whole package.. wonderful people... wonderful training... and indeed works magic.
Regarding upgrading your PSE... why... once you start working with Topaz the PSP or PSE will be used for some basic and advanced functions such as layers... I am a Topaz Evangelist indeed.
