Nikon 7700, canon g15, fuji x20 are all in the same catagory. If you already use a nikon speedlight with your dslr it will also be compatible with their p7700.

Lx7 is an awesome camera...especially for the price. I use one for my work. The f/1.4 lens is SO nice.

I agree! Had the LX5 and loved it so much, upgraded to the LX7. My DSLR is lonely....

I have had good results with the Canon G15. As small as it is, however, it is a little bulkier than a true "pocket camera. The lens opens up to f/1.8 and the optical zoom range is 28 - 140mm. It shoots RAW as well a JPEG + RAW. It pairs well with the smaller Canon 270 speedlite.

As a former IBM-er, I am late to the Apple party. However, the iPhone 5 with the Camera+ App (from iTunes) takes amazing pictures, and you won't have two devices to carry around.
My Sony NEX is another alternative to check out. Lots of Pro photographers carry it, and, some say it has more capabilities than DSLR cameras, and is worlds smaller.

I like the Canon SL1 i bought for my wife. Very small DSLR with the option to change lenses. The focusing in movie mode is close to the ability of my Vixia camcorder.

Depends on budget, Nikon Coolpix A has a DX sensor in a compact camera. Sony has a fullframe sensor in a a compact but double the price of the Nikon

Panasonic LX7. A little smaller is the Panasonic ZS30. Very small, and fits your description, is the Sony RX100 and, the brand new version, RX100M2.

I have the RX100 instead of a DSLR. If I lost it or it broke I would buy a new one in a heartbeat.

My wife has an LX7, loves it and normally takes better pictures than I do. Skills count more than cameras.

I have the RX 100 as well. It's a little pricey ($650.00) but the Image Quality is EXCELLENT!!! It's small & fits inside of a pocket. It has total manual control as well as aperture, shutter and has automated shot options. The built-in flash is pretty good. Battery life is really good (I bought an extra one just in case).

These are pretty crappy snaps but they show what the camera is capable of doing.

RX 100, f8.0, 1/1000", ISO 800, EV +0.7 HDR through Photomatix Essenstials (+/- 1.5)
RX 100, f8.0, 1/1000", ISO 800, EV +0.7 HDR throu...

RX 100, f5.6, 1/125", ISO 125, White Balance auto

Hi all..I love my dslr but find that I cannot just pop into my bag and go. I seem to use my cell phone camera quite often...which isn't terrible but not the best. I am looking for a great smaller camera that has manual controls and can take excellent shots. I have been told that the canon powershot g1x is supposed to be fantastic but a bit pricey. Any recommendations would be great. Thanks!

How about G-15 or G-12 from Canon, a bit smaller and lighter and less expensive,
Bob.

I have used a Canon G1, G9, and now a G15 as my everyday camera and take more unique shots with that camera than I do with my 7D or 5DII. I can shoot HD movies, panos, HDR, and most anything except fast moving stuff like birds (7D) or wide angle landscapes (5DII).

I switched from a complex dslr to the Canon SX50!
Simple. Super zoom! I love it at <$400!

The advantages of SX50 super zoom!

I have an SX30 IS and although a nice camera, it's not very compact which is what you need in a knock around camera.

Look at the canon g15 as well as the g1x. both are very good cameras and have an optical viewfinder, something I would never be without. Also, both have most manual controls and both raw and jpeg. see the dp review on them.

Olympus SP 800UZ or newer model. No controls totally "automatic", but a plethora of programs. Great camera. Great photos. I win lots of photo shows. Its the photographer not the camera that MAKES A DIFFERENCE Alyn
