I don't have this lens, but I see from the URL that 594 people have reviewed this lens. Reading those should give you a pretty good idea what actual users think of the lens.

With out knowing what other lens you have, I'd be more inclined to recommend, Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR II, which is a much, much better lens.

If you need a lower light lens the one you list is NOT it. The D 7100 deserves a better lens than that. Good lenses are an investment and some easily cost more than the body and will outlast the body. What you like to shoot and what focal lengths you already have are two bits of info we need to know to help you decide.

I have this lens. Have not used it for a long time. I never was very impressed by it. Take this with a grain of salt.

IF you want a lower light lens, then you need a 2.8 and you'll not find a decent lens at the price point you're looking for.

You'd may want to check this site out for lens.

You could check for used or refurbished lens here.
http://www.keh.com/

Even the big online people, such as Adorama, or B&H have used and refurbished lens. There are many more also.

Just read your post. I use a D7100 and offer a few of my views. The 55 - 200 worked on my D60 but when I switched to the D7000, I found it very mediocre in its performance. I have the 50mm 1.8D, again I rate it as mediocre. If you have bought one, I would recommend that you Fine Tune it to the D7100. I found that I could use it after the FT, otherwise it had been a unused piece of gear. I might suggest the 70-300 VR, which I found to be a very useful lens at a very good price. My present lens on the D7100 is the new 80-400 G VRII. Which is brilliant on this body.

Before it's to late to return, you may want to look at the newer Nikon 50mm f/1.8G before settling on the F/1.8D series. Or the more expensive 50mm f1.4G

Amen on the investment advice. You will hate yourself later for not spending the extra money. Good glass is well worth it.

Is it me or is there really a reason to go for a 2.8 lens when a sifgnificantly less expensive 4.5 is available. I realize that Bokeh may come into question, but low light is no longer a factor what with just about unlimited ISO capability built in to most decent Digital Cameras these days. I know, I know, noise is awful, but is there really that much at 800 ISO compared to 100 ISO? I don't see it at 8x10" papeer, so maybe the trade off is an acceptable one. Think about what you want from your pictures (images) and decide 2.8 of 4.5, it's your money, and they're your eyes.
