WOW, you started by asking advice on a zoom lens, and you bought a prime lens. Now you will need to zoom with your feet! Guess you found out that fast zooms cost big $$$
I shoot with a D7100 (still use my D300 though)...What's nice about both models I have, is that they can still meter using older manual focus lenses in either manual or aperture priority modes. That allows me to use my extensive collection of older manual focus lenses (a good number of which are F2.8 or faster)...Yeah, I do have to focus manually, but hell, I did that for decades anyway...Many of the images (macro shots especially) on my Flickr stream were shot using older lenses (& they all have metal mounts)& they stand up very well against the new, expensive alternatives.

Seems to me like having a Rolls Royce and putting 'Remold' tyres on,, I would certenly go for a much better lens,, The 50mm 1.4 is under £300 now, Just seems a waste to me using the 1.8d..
Just my honest opinion mind !!

Thank you so much for the response but at over $1000 ... is a little over my budget at moment..lol.. and at that price it should be at least a F 4 or 1.8..already have a 3.5 need a lower light lens..
If your looking for a lower light lens your not going to get it with this one .F4-5.6 not a bad lens but if your shooting low light use a tripod or up you ISO

With out knowing what other lens you have, I'd be more inclined to recommend, Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR II, which is a much, much better lens.
I agree with the recommendation - faster lens and broader range of focal length!

I have that lens it pretty good I took this shot at the Baltimore zoo with it
Faster lenses isolate subjects better. No way to really duplicate the effect in post...Yeah, you can do "selective" blurring, but the effect isn't the same...

Is it me or is there really a reason to go for a 2.8 lens when a sifgnificantly less expensive 4.5 is available. I realize that Bokeh may come into question, but low light is no longer a factor what with just about unlimited ISO capability built in to most decent Digital Cameras these days. I know, I know, noise is awful, but is there really that much at 800 ISO compared to 100 ISO? I don't see it at 8x10" papeer, so maybe the trade off is an acceptable one. Think about what you want from your pictures (images) and decide 2.8 of 4.5, it's your money, and they're your eyes.
Is it me or is there really a reason to go for a 2... (

In my experience, faster lenses also focus more accurately in low light.
Absolutely true , they allow more light into the camera, thus helping with the contrast detection focus systems of the camera

This wont really help you select the lens but my advice is buy the best you can afford.
I have 3 Nikkor lenses that I bought many years ago that have outlasted both 2 Nikon film and 3 digital cameras.
2 of them, a non VR 80-200 2.8 and the non VR 24-70 2.8 sell for more than I paid for them years ago.
Both get stunning results. Both rather large and heavy by todays standards but cant think that I would ever part with them.
Other than my Leicas (that are gathering dust) and the D300S, I have never really been 'emotionally'
attached to a camera, that I wouldnt sell it for the right price.
But lenses are different.
On the other hand, I bought an 18-200 Nikkor when they came out.
Nice and a great focal range but just doesnt get the results or 'feel' as good as the 2 mentioned.
Will probably sell it, though they go (second hand) for half the price I paid.
Its been said "you forget the price you paid but never forget the quality", or something like that.
And just had a final thought.
Both those lenses probably sell, used, for more that the D200 and the D300 cameras I have.
Even the best cameras go down in price after they are used. Unless thy are old Leicas perhaps :)
Don't have first hand experience with this lens but check out the ratings... Nearly all of the 593 ratings give a 4 or 5 out of 5. People power and referrals like this speak volumes. Good luck and enjoy.
Angel,
Have the 18-200MM on my D7100 and really like it. Goes for about $600.00 at ADORAMA & B&H.

Before it's to late to return, you may want to look at the newer Nikon 50mm f/1.8G before settling on the F/1.8D series. Or the more expensive 50mm f1.4G
Settle on the 1.8D? It's one of the sharpest lenses Nikon has made. The only reason to go to the G is if your camera does NOT have an AF motor in it, which the D7100 does. If you have a D7100 and want a nifty-fifty, save money and get the f1.8D.
My favorite AF lens on my D7100 is the 2 touch 80-200mm Nikkor (non VR version)...This image shows how sharp it is....Got mine for $600 used...

If you really want that lens, look at Ebay, pretty sure you can get it for around $100.
I have one for a backup, and actually had to use it when I (gasp) dropped my 28-300 lens. It wasn't too bad, but for that quality, I don't think I'd pay the "new" price. Just my 2 cents.
