Beach,
I just checked the Nikon site and you can not and I emphasize this use an extender with your lenses. Captain said they could not be used and I checked into it since I am a Canon user. He is correct, and the use of your lens with the extender could cause damage. Again you have lenses that have decent usage, just get that tripod, best investment you can make.

George

Look in the UHH Classified category for lenses to sate your "Lens Lust" disease. Its a "vicious cycle," get a new camera, then you want/need a new bigger lens, get the new bigger lens and shortly you want a newer bigger badder lens, get the newer bigger badder lens and then you want a newer better camera so on an so on....ect...ect...ect!
Its a sad disease but were all addicted to it.

Use the lenses you have until you know exactly how they will perform. If you think that buying another lens will lead to image improvement, you're WRONG. The 300mm zoom lens that you already have will do a great job if you learn to use it properly.

Make certain that you balance your camera to a color checker before you even start to take one picture otherwise you are literally treading water with no boat in sight.

Merry Christmas beachlover...I love the beach too and wish I were there right now...here in NM waiting for a snowstorm :o)

I bought an 18-200 Nikon a while back and although not the fastest glass. I have been so happy with this lens..I think you would be too. It is a fantastic lens and almost does not leave my camera since it has such a wide range. Check it out...I think it will serve you well..if you want a bit more zoom you can also check out the 28-300 a bit more money but worth it if you need more range. I think you can also find one on b&h video photo site...or KeH used. Good luck and Merry Christmas!

I agree. What's wrong with the lens you have? (55-300mm)

You COULD do a little cropping....

The 300mm lens IS nasty because of the aperture. A max aperture of 5.6 and BAM! Blurry photos.

Seems to me like you have suffered the consequences of not getting proper gear right away.... Blurred photos and a sunset that has gone away, unless you have gorgeous sunsets like that ALL the time.... LOL!

Under $1000 bucks for a telephoto lens? Are you looking for something in the 500mm range? If so, phoenix makes a nasty one for like $400. I suggest you get something like the 70-200 f4 L lens and just do a little cropping, unless you are printing 40'x60'... LOL! That lens is about 5-600$. Not bad for an L lens. What's your price range?

I use a D90 and have the 18-105mm kit lens and also the 55-300mm. I have recently retired to Florida and have been to many different beaches to shoot, I mostly use the 18-108mm. The 55-300mm will give you an effective 450mm. How far away is what you want to shoot?

Buy a good tripod. You have a good lens. You may have to crop some of your pics to draw the subject in,but you already have a good lens. Practice, practice, practice.

Well Clark - I have a 75-300 that's pretty much a permanent fixture on my camera tho I do use the 18-55 kit lens for really close ups. I think I know what you're saying tho - you want to bring in the far away things closer than what you're 55-300 will do - right? I don't know if there's really an answer to that. I looked at the 50-500 last night and I see the prices on them have gone up so........Do you have a camera store near you that will let you rent a lens to check it out or will let you walk outside with it so you can see if it's what you want?

Consider the Tamron 18-270. If you want pro glass then buy from your cameras manufacture. This Tamron is a GREAT walk around lens.
