I asked because I am interested in buying a 180mm. When I started my search for a 180mm I found that there were so many editions of that lens going back to the 1970s that I didn't know where to begin my search for a lens for my camera. Some are full frame some are not some have autofocus some don't. There are so many letters of the alphabet after each different lens that it's hard for me to decipher them all. I asked the question on this post because everybody seemed to be adding several prime lenses to their list of favorites.

Generally right, add to that macro lens and a few more specialized lens if you are into that type of photography.

@ Fergus: Get auto focus and the latest version you can find

You might not use auto focus, but then you might use it-- I usually do.

And if you ever sell it, you will get a better price.

Based on experience. I like buying stuff, and selling the old is a good way to pay for the new.

Do any of you have a 180mm on a full frame?

Yup, 180mm f2.8 ED works on my F, Nikomat, and D700.

I am just curious as to what build and model you think is the best Nikon lens. I am thinking of the 3 areas:

1) prime
2) zoom tele
3) zoom wide angle

What I am curious about is what you think is Nikon's all time best built and performance lens in the 3 areas I have selected. Nikon has many lenses but they are not all the best. Just looking for the stand outs. Thanks for your input.

1) 200 f/2-- sharp enough to cut Brie.

That's sarcasm, right?

Sharp enough to cut Brie cleanly-- no mess.

quitarbts,

I have to agree with OnDSnap with the 'Trinity' of Nikon Lenses; Nikon 14-24 f/2.8, 24-70 f/2.8 70-200 f/2.8. I also have the 85mm f/1.8 D lens which is great for portrait shots. Of course it all depends on what type of shooting you do or plan to do. If you're interested in Macro, which I do not do, I have heard that a lot of people like the 105mm lens by Nikon. Perhaps the 180mm lens is just as good or better as recommended by JennT.

If you are going for a major telephoto lens (500mm or better), then take out a loan, sell a kid, or remortgage your home and buy your wife flowers and chocolate and take her to a broadway play to ease the pain! Just decide what you want to shoot; and then, start to make your decision. Good luck and the best to you.

Yes, it's an outstanding lens and a bargain at that.

These three lenses are certainly the "trinity" for Nikon. I have the two longer ones, but opted for the 17-35 f/2.8 instead of the 14-24. The fact that the 14-24 does not have a filter ring and requires such awkward filter holders makes it difficult to use - particularly if you are changing lenses or filters frequently.
