I'd have to say rules are meant to be broken but they must be followed to an extent... so go break a few rules but keep the rest in tact!
Which ones to break -
which ones to keep,
yep that's the rub.
You've got to know when to walk away, and know when to run.......
Sorry, there I go dating myself yet again.
composition and exposure are two I don't break! the rest can be broken to an extent... and everyone breaks the rule of 3rd's as if every single photograph was centered, we'd never have a different style, angle, etc. The rule of thirds is meant to be broken!
The only time I do break the exposure rule is when shooting Boudoir in bright natural lighting! The rule then is to under expose a couple of notches with your ISO high and your shutter speed at about 30 or so depending... Adds a nice softness to the light but really brings out the appeal of the subject!
For me having fun is important but I wouldn't be having fun if I didn't know that occasionally I get a really good shot. That only happens when all the right circumstances come together. So beyond having fun I try to watch for proper lighting, good composition, sharp focus, etc.
Oh.. and btw, PEPSI!!! (I work for a Pepsi bottling company so I must push Pepsi but it was my soft drink of choice since I was a kid.)
#1 Know your camera
#2 Know what you want to say
I have studied the rules of composition and try to implement them with every shot. The results are better.
I also worry about camera shake, not being as steady as I once was. I make use of anything to lean, sit or brace against. One of the best image stabilizers I have found is Caffeine free Pepsi. lol
Pepsi Rules!! (Diet Caf Free)
Coke Drules!!
Also, way before your Exposeur, Composure........batteries!!
Try not to have a senior moment, hook up the catheter or put on your depends, and don't drop the camera. :)
WoW - that is a lot for me to remeber, and I suppose one should do those in that order.
To : bob mielke, You hit the nail on the head!!!!! I never look at photography any other way. This is my hobby, NOT my job, [but i love it so much, i wish it was],so why not enoy what you love!!!!

That's a good idea. I'll have to resubmit and add that.
sometimes the best shots are the ones you just snap on an instant,,in the spur of the moment,no time to mess with settings
just capture the moment,,have fun.
If your not having fun or enjoying it.......don't do it! Your lack of energy comes through in your work if your having a bad day!!
Simplify, eliminate everything that doesn't help your image say what you want.
Chevy.
Coke (with sugar, none of that nasty corn syrup stuff!).

Number One Rule: What is it a picture of?
Number Two Rule: Fill the frame.
Number Three Rule: Push the button
Once it was - take off the lens cap.
Now, it is probably Stop, put the camera down and really LOOK at the target area.
