It gives you a choice when you import if you want to leave catalog 4 alone or not

Thanks Jerry, I know the program installs separately, what I don't want is it to pull in any of my catalogs from 4...did it give you the option to NOT install 4's cats... If you recall a while back I had an issue with my main catalog in 4. Still unresolved and Adobe was of no help trying to fix it, so I want to keep 4's catalog out of 5 all together. I realize I can create new Cats...I just want a fresh start in 5 and not sure if LR5 upgrade will allow that or will I need to purchase a full copy to keep Cat 4's out of LR5. Sorry if my question wasn't clear. After rereading it, it wasn't to me either. DOE!

Not sure why you must have the boxed version for so much more money. When you download the LR5 executable it's around 810 MB for windows. You can easily burn it to a DVD and save yourself a lot of money.

To answer your question, I no longer trust Adobe...I upgraded CS5 to CS6 via download, which I never do...and yes I burned it to disk and hopefully that copy will work should I ever need it. Other software that I've done the same with (via download vs boxed) hasn't always worked upon re-installation. I called Adobe to purchase a DVD of CS6 just so I would have a copy from Adobe, since it's no longer available for me to download through my account, which by the way, they told me it would always be available should I need it. In other words it disappeared from my account after the announcement they were going by way of Creative Cloud. On top of that, when I purchased CS5 a couple years back, within two months of that purchase CS6 came out, Adobe didn't tell me, why not wait for CS6. Adobe told me I can upgrade to CS6 (FREE) as soon as it became available, they told me I would get a notification when it was available, never heard from them, I called after about 5 months of not hearing from them, they're reply literally "To bad, you waited to long". That cost me another $500 to upgrade. SO I don' trust Adobe as far as I can spit. Then an issue came up within LR4, it was creating 2 separate folders from the same catalog which I posted here about 6 months ago, unfortunately no one here or searching the internet could come up with a solution, Adobe was even less help. And now forcing people to beckon to they're Creative Cloud subscription BS, if it was just PS I used, for $19.00 a month, no big deal, but I use several Adobe products and with all the other software subscriptions per year I use... I can't afford another subscription. Which by the way is over $2,000 a yr. I prefer OWNING what I pay for, not leasing, not renting. LR will someday too fall prey to a subscription. I'm pretty sure of that. And I'm pretty sure updating Camera Raw will become an issue as new cameras are released and they aren't making money via LR subscriptions for as long as LR stays out of the Clouds that is. Hope this answers your question. Sorry for the rant...I just have a beef with Adobe. If I was a bit younger than 61 and had the time, I'd re-learn some other software, they (Adobe) is not the only fish in the pond...which I think they will soon realize.

Correct.

I realize this, but one will look for an existing and the Full doesn't, maybe I'm mistaken...

Upgrade version of LR5...from 4-5, I prefer buying a boxed version and willing to pay ($149 vs $79) full price for LR5 if need be so as not to over write LR4...When I purchased 4 upgrade from (boxed) it installed while leaving Version 3 as is...my question is, with what's going on over at Adobe, buying a boxed version of LR5 UPGRADE... will it install separate or over right 4? I emailed Adobe with no response, as usual...

If you purchase the download from Adobe and install it, it will not over write version 4. I purchased LR 5 in this fashion and still have 4 available on my computer.

Actually, you don't own any software. Never have and probably never will. All you are getting when you pay for software is an End User License Agreement (EULA). That's what allows software companies to do whatever they want with their software without consulting their user base, including refusing to support it after several years to force users to upgrade their EULA.

It will leave 4 on your machine but use the catalog to update. after you are done with installing the V5 upgrade just uninstall V4

I read that i can upgrade from LR 3? And it is not going in the cloud? THAT IS IMPORTANt. I do not see how anyone can afford to keep up with the rental concept that is not a company. It's going to be an elite brand Adobe is targeting to provide companies, they think they are unique and they are right in a sense, but they are phasing out of individual users.

Yep. All you own is the right to use it, and even then that right is usually limited to one or two installs.

I'm not sure if this was mentioned or not but LR4.4 was the last version that would run under Windows Vista. IF you upgrade to five you will also have to upgrade your OS to Windows 7 or Windoes 8.

I have been an individual user "in the cloud" with Adobe since February 2012.

After opening Excel, plugging in the cost of Photoshop CS5, plugging in the cost of upgrades every 15-18 months (I always upgrade), I determined that over the rest of my life, if prices stayed the same, I could never spend as much money with a $19.99/month lease as I would buying and upgrading.
