They say that it's a bit of a crippled version at best. I think it's still full of bugs as well.

I don't know who "they" are but they are 100% wrong.

Also as far as bugs? That's not what I've heard OR experienced at all.

I've read that about all it can do better than version 4 is brush tool, spot tool, clone tool and graduated filter tools are improved. I prefer to use CS for this stuff anyway.

Not true again...there is quite an exciting list of features.

Besides, I'm not sure I'm going to keep supporting Adobe by buying much more of their products. This Cloud thing really has a bunch of us bothered.

Luckily, I'm happy to use the best tool and don't get bogged down by things like that.

Why in the world would you get something that's specifically designed for post processing of photographic images, (and is stellar at that particular job, I might add)....and then not use it for that purpose?

Because I don't need a post processing app. I already have one. What I need and asked about is a program to ingest and catalog my images.

Hmm...well, if you're a Canon shooter DPP is free and does the same thing.

Photoshop has "mini-bridge" to accomplish that task. Full size Adobe Bridge does too.

I agree with you. And you're right, DPP is free for Canon users and It works great. I've been using it for years. There's too much stuff out there in this new photography world. That's why you get all these posts. Too much to mentally process. That's why everybody's all confused about their cameras, equipment, tripods, sd and compact flash cards, post processing programs, and just about everything else. There is so much postprocessing going on, And really only because you can do it. My personal feeling is many photographers ruin perfectly good photos with their post processing. Remember the old motto , " KISS". It's still applies in the photographic world.

The download as well as the program functionality expires June 7th.

I was under the impression that the beta was good until June 30th, when did that change?

IMHO the new features are very good...less and less reason to go to PS.

I have been using it since it was released, there are many new features I use, if the expiration date is coming up the final release shouldn't be to far off. I will be upgrading when it's released

No. Just installed LR4. Still a lot more to learn.

Start your pre processing on LR4 and finish it on PSE 8. Very good partner.

I hate to say this, but I don't think total knowledge of LR is possible. That's probably not true, but it seems like I'm always finding new things it can do and new ways to use it.

However, I believe that my statement does apply to Photoshop. That program is just too big for anyone to master the entire thing.

Downloaded and using every day...it's a huge step up from 4.

Are you saving you photos on LR 4 also? I thought when LR 5 is released it will not recognize the LR 5 beta catalog. I import a few photos to work on in 5 to try out the new features which I like

No.

As soon as I finish post processing and storing the files where they are going to go, I delete them.

This isn't my day-job....I'm a hobbyist.

For real "save-worthy" photos that have sentimental value, I archive them as a full size tiff.

for the rest, they either go on Flickr or get posted online for some other reason (hedgehog).

Anything else gets culled out immediately.

PS: It will recognize the 5 beta catalog...at least that's the way LR4 beta to release worked, and i see no reason to think otherwise.

No. br br As soon as I finish post processing and... (show quote)

here is a quote from a review "As always, you want to be a bit cautious with beta versions. Try it on a few images, but don’t import all your photographs and start changing them. Adobe won’t let you upgrade an existing catalog – a good precaution, I think – so you’ll have to create a new catalog. It’s a good idea to make copies of the images you want to try out in Lightroom 5, rather than using the originals."

Well..that may be a quote but I've been using it since LR3 and went to LR 4 beta and did fine.

Everyone will do what they think is prudent...for myself, even if I trashed the last 50 pictures of my sidewalk..I don't care :)

Why do these Lightroom discussions fail to mention all the wonderful output menus. Book, Web, Map, Slideshow, Publish? Lightroom is the best for printing.
Photoshop is not integral to LR but acts like a plug-in like HDR, NIk etc.
It is great for outputting to email, posting on line, or just puting photo or a batch to a drive.
