To do that I'd have to have a 50,000mm lens.

Very good pictures. You did have a long lens, but I look at the pictures and have the feeling that you weren't that far from them. Even with the 300mm lens you were quite close. I am going to be happy letting you take those kind of pictures and hopefully post them so all of us can enjoy them. Just don't get too close!

You can see some interesting photos of a guy who was going against everyones advice about getting too frendly with a grizzly. The grizzly ate him. And his girl friend. The bears (two) were spotted by helicopter, hunted down and shot. You can see these photos on line if you can get the Alaska fish and game web site. Happened a few years back.
The dumb victims didn't have time to decide whether the bears were "bluffing" or not. I will pay the premium on a nice insurance policy on you, if you will permit.

Thank you Ivan!!!

WOW! WOW! What a story! With pictures!

I just showed the wife.......I think I've lost her.....

I'm still interested!

Do you carry protection, now??

In thinking about this, this path is probably the local animal pathway. Not for people only...

Usually I carry no bear protection. If I think the danger level is out of bounds then I`d like to have a pepper spray with me. I never carry a gun.On quite a few occasions I walked the same trail without any protection but my foreign accent hoping the bears could not stand it.During July-August there are about 70 bears concentrated it the area.
Yes,bears like the same trail turned by the USFS into a boardwalk. Obviously it is much easier for the bear to walk the boardwalk than to fight the raiforest. But they also show us what they think about civilization at the same time because they love to crap right in the middle of the boardwalk. That creates another kind of a safety hazard because people have tendency to step in it and it is very slippery.

Ivan,
I've been a scuba instructor for years and the one thing that always has to be drilled into folks heads is that we are "visitors" to the ocean, forest...insert habitat here and we are in thier domain. When we forget that, we get reminded....and usually hurt.
Rocco

Exactly! With the exception of charging Brown bears I had more problems with stupid clients than with the bears. In every single group of clients there was at least one person who would not listen to and follow the safety instruction. That would create problems and risks for the whole group and of course the guides. Many out of state visitors think that area is some kind of Disneyland with trained harmless bears. Thanks Rocco.

These are amazing photos....I would be running in the opposite direction so I am glad you are sharing them. Please be careful in any future endeavors of photographing any more Brown Bears.

OMG! I am so envious! My husband And I went on an Alaskan trip and it has been our very favorite so far! It is majestically beautiful and serene. I browsed through some of your other photos.....I see you are fond of shrooms, my husband thought I was a nutcase, everytime we came upon a mushroom I was down on my belly shooting away! Got some really cool shots but none like yours with the black background....how did you shoot those! Fabulous!

I like a challenge (as you obviously do as well) and photographing mushrooms belongs to that category.I explained how I photograph mushrooms in my thread "Extreme mushroom photography" so please read it there. You cannot get a decent mushroom photo using a on camera flash, using any flash is in this case a gamble because you do not see where the light falls. The dark background either takes care of itself or you can carry a sheet of a black cardboard.
If you have any specific questions I wll gladly answer them. Thanks, Ivan.

You are probably thinking about Timothy Treadwell. I do not rub my nose with bears and my life ambition is NOT to become a bear`s scat. I just want some decent photos. Thanks,Ivan.

I would take photos with Alaskan. He can use his puny 300mm. I'm going to connect my camera to my 8 inch refractor telescope and have a good pair of running shoes on and the truck running. Sure, I'll take pictures of him and his bears, not a problem.

Sounds like a good plan but your 8 inch refractor telescope is pretty much useless inside our rainforest. No good place or time to set up your tripod, the light levels worse than low.
Thanks,Ivan.

Wonderful shots, I hope you were using a LONG lens! http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Respect/respect-046.gif

In case anyone wasn't aware, other names for brown bears are "Grizzly" and "Kodiak". http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Surprise/surprised-033.gif

No, Brown bears are Brown Bears. Grizzly's and Kodiak are not Brown bears. They may be brown bears, but that is not the same. While all bears are dangerous, the Brown bear is the least pro-vocable of the bunch.
