Brown bears are extremely dangerous, please do not follow my example. All photos taken in the wilderness of Southeast Alaska, the bears are of course wild.

Wonderful shots, I hope you were using a LONG lens! http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Respect/respect-046.gif

In case anyone wasn't aware, other names for brown bears are "Grizzly" and "Kodiak". http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Surprise/surprised-033.gif

Something tells me Ivan is using a long tele in taking those "close-ups".... Every time I remember some of those "dumb-ass" things I did on Annette Is ( like stepping in FRESH skat and still continue on - no gun, no nuttin except teenage stupidy, I shutter)...........

Grizzly = Ursus arctos horribilis, the term is used for bears living inland.
Brown bear = Ursus arctos horribilis, the term is used for bears living within 75 miles of a coast. They grow bigger than inland bears.
Kodiak = Ursus arctos midendorfi, a different subspecie.
The only bears native to the North America are black bears, Ursus americanus. Brown/grizzly bears came to the NA from Asia about 40000 years ago. There used to be about 30 different subspecies.
Thanks,Ivan.

I have been within 15feet on some occasions and survived 4 Brown bear charges withour a scratch (because the bears were bluffing).Lenses involved: 18-135 and 70-300,a few shots also with a "bridge" camera. I agree, searching for bears in a rain forest is DUMB.But they do not come to visit me in my living room which is something to be happy about.
Thanks,Ivan.

More spectacular shots. I am pretty sure that I will never take shots like these. Even with a long lens I wouldn't be close enough :)
And if by chance I was close enough I would be shaking too hard to get a clear picture.

I've been thinking that if, my wife and I go back to Alaska, we need to visit your area and maybe hang around with you.

I'm rethinking the hanging around with you part......

I would love to visit his area and hang around with him, (actually working on that very thing with my husband right now). I will just make sure Ivan is in the lead. :-)
