It's quite simple, when you really know how to make important decisions:
Canon begins with "C", the third letter in the alphabet.
Nikon begins with "N", the fourteenth letter.
Three is an odd number, fourteen is even.
You have 2 hands, 2 legs, 2 eyes, 2 ears; all even numbers.
So, the clear choice is NIKON, yay!

AHHHHhh..That explains why I use/like Canon...Being an odd one that is!!!

You can make a whole lot of arguments for either system. Each company continues to try and top the other which is why both systems work so well. I started out with Cannon and moved to Nikon but it had nothing to do with which system was better. It’s kind of like the Mercedes/BMW argument, both are great but it really doesn’t matter which one you choose as no matter what you will be happy.

I bought into Nikon (with no regrets) for the simple reason that the Nikon was $100 less than the comparable Canon DSLR at the time I bought it (on sale). If the Canon had been on sale I would have happily bought into that instead. It's a personal choice--now go make it!

I would recommend a Nikon. The Canons are a little bit more user friendly but since you said you have been taking pictures for a long time, the Nikons just take better quality pictures.

"C" ~ Canon stands for Correct Camera
"N" ~ Nikon stands for No Good Camera.

Some one made a great point... to use both systems and see which one you really like. Make sure to get all the same lenses so you will be able to make the best comparisons.

I went with Canon, because my sister had some extra lenses she no longer used or wanted... ( Its good to have a big sister!)

Camera has to feel right, have the lens you "must have" for the type of shooting you want to do and in the price range you can afford. I went Canon for indoor sports. Nikon can do it too but:
70-200mm f2.8 sports lens for Nikon = 2150.00
70-200mm f2.8 sports lens for Canon = 1250.00

17-55mm f2.8 Nikon = 1540.00
17-55mm f2.8 Canon = 1000.00

Well, you get the picture unless you are still saving for that NIKKOR lens. Guess what I am trying to say is that with Canon you can afford Canon lenses and with Nikon you will shoot Sigma or another brand. You will see the Nikon people jumping in at any second now. LOL

If you are serious, and if you have not been there yet, go to kenrockwell.com - ALL your questions will be answered without bias ! Canon took away the pro market from Nikon in the 1980's - and for good reason ! Especially of late, Nikon has been making up ground in some isolated specific areas - albeit at higher costs ! If you are looking to ever get used lenses - Canon has the advantage because ot their greater proliferation.

OK, what you need to do is to decide how much you want to spend on a camera. Then look at both Canon and Nikon camera in that price range and see which one has the features that are important to you. The decision should then be an easy one.

Agree, but always remember you will want a good lens specific to your shooting criteria and make sure you have the money for that lens too. There is no such thing as the perfect woman and likewise, there will be sacrifices when picking your camera. Know what is important to you and get those qualities in the camera and lens, the rest will work itself out. (women can reverse that because there is no perfect man either)

Well done video ... CUTE, but does nothing to answer the question. Both Nikon and Canon are going to cost about the same when comparing equal camera models or equal lenses. Which one feels best in YOUR hands? Put your money into lenses ... and don't forget about Tamron, Sigma and Tokina lenses! As an example, I prefer the Sigma 150mm f/2.8 IS Macro lens to the Canon 180mm f3.5 non-IS Macro lens. Which ever you pick, have fun, that's what it's all about.

THE USE OF NON-NIKON ACCESSORIES MAY DAMAGE YOUR CAMERA AND WILL VOID YOUR NIKON WARRANTY

Same for Canon, so again I suggest you think hard about the lens you want and if you can afford the Nikkor lens or if you rather buy the Canon lens. Yes it is all about fun but you cannot have fun if you cannot afford the lens. And it really bites if you have to pay any repairs yourself because you used an off brand flash or lens (however unlikely it is to happen).

In Nikon's defense, If I had money and was shooting landscapes, I would own a Nikon myself but as neither applies to me... CANON all the way.

Please get your "facts" correct ... using Sigma or Tamron lenses will NOT alter your Canon or Nikon camera guarantee. Just as using a Sandisk or e-Delkin memory card will NOT alter your camera guarantee. Using a B&W filter on a Nikon lens does nothing to alter the lens warrantee either. Please get your facts correct. Thank you.

for me it was all about how it felt in my hands.... some of the more expensive models did not really have more functions, they were just on buttons instead of in a menu....

p.s. nikon
