I use Nikon BUt you have to decide. the advice to go to a store and hold and feel and try each out is the way to go.. You could rent an outfit of each and try both for a week then decide. Each brand has its Pros and also its Cons

Stevenkl - did enough research to narrow it down to two but Y.
That may give him his answer. NON of the above? LOL

The film proves it is not the camera but the person behind it.

Stevenkl,
Hi there. I recommend also a professional camera store, not Best Buy etc. I bought a Nikon 50D years ago and found it great for photos BUT now my brother gave me a telescope for Astrophotography and the D50 lacks many items which would make the photography easier. No USB port for remote shutter for sure. So talk with others here and a professional camera shop with the thoughts of what you want to take in pictures. I wish you the best.

Hmmmmm.....That's logical......I guess.

It's quite simple, when you really know how to make important decisions:
Canon begins with "C", the third letter in the alphabet.
Nikon begins with "N", the fourteenth letter.
Three is an odd number, fourteen is even.
You have 2 hands, 2 legs, 2 eyes, 2 ears; all even numbers.
So, the clear choice is NIKON, yay!

:D

I love this. For a few years I used both Canon and Nikon. My analysist said that I had bipolar camera ambivalent disorder. I would shoot with Canon or Nikon depending on who I was when I woke up in the morning. After threapy I have moved to the dark side and now just shoot Nikon.

Try both systems and something that means a lot to me is how the camera feels in your hands. Learn the cameras and close your eyes then see if you can get to the controls without looking. For sports or bird photography you need to master the camera.

Both systems are great. It is the photographer that makes a great photo not the system.

Hi Steve - I realize you're probably calling us all a bunch of whackos - or worse - but............I have a Canon and love it. How did I settle for Canon? Was looking at several others and Canon stood out the most - easy to work and learn - and felt right in my hands. If you're still reading these I suggest you go to a camera shop as, suggested above, only one difference - tell the sales person to get lost - until YOU pick out the one YOU like the most, then get him/her back and hand the camera to him/her and ask them to show you a few things. If he/she goes to fumbling around you know they know about as much as you do - then find a sales person that DOES know what they are doing.

But you have to start with which camera feels the most comfortable to YOU - with no interference.

I like my Nikon Coolpix L110, but I am really liking my new Nikon D3100, so I guess I am a little biased, but hey I like your logic!

I like your Alfred Newman picture, and let me be the first to nominate him as a candidate for the 2012 elections... He couldn't possibly make things worse off... LOL

It's a mad mad world we live in. Alfred Newman for president!!!! LOL

Steve, I think your decision is made. You took your time to narrow it down to the two most recognizable DSLR companies in the US consumer market. Do you have a nearby camera store that you have dealt with in the past? Do you have a close friend that uses either Nikon or Canon? Trust the professional in the store or a "photo" friend. Labor no more over this decision since you cannot go wrong... Nikon or Canon... in my opinion.

I'm having a hard time deciding which DSLR to get.
I had an Olympus E-510 which was cute and took nice images, but I no longer have it. Now I'm between Canon and Nikon. I decided against Sony and Pentax...and wonder why. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
I have been a photographer since I was 17 years old and have used most every brand of camera. Just being rediculously indecisive now at age 58.

Thanks to all,! Steve 8-)

Welcome to the site. That being said it all begins with what you like go visit a good camera store that has lots to select from. Myself I have big hands so the way they fit into my hand is important too me the buttons on them are easy to get to all things like that. In the end I decided to stay with Canon as for most of my life I have used Canon's. The choice is yours. Good luck looking have fun doing it to.
