You might consider renting before you buy.

If you decide on the Nikon 70-200, you might want to consider the VR model since it is less expensive than the new VRII model. This would be especially true if you are using a crop frame camera such as the D300, D7000 and the like. The older model would have to be purchased used, maybe look at KEH. Good luck with your shooting.

A lot depends upon your camera. I have used Nikon's 70-300 with a D3, ISO at 1000 or 1200 to caputure dragon flies on the wing. Could od this because the D3 handles high ISO very nicely. I have the 70-200 2.8 also and find that diffucult to usu hand-held.

I have a Canon 5D MII, with the Canon 2.8 70-200 lens. Here is an example picture.

Very nice! I also shoot the Canon 70-200mmL f2.8 lens for soccer (both day and nighttime). Love it. And for sports I don't need the IS because of the fast shutter speed.

Most of the suggestions were pointing you to the right direction, actually. F/2.8, 70-200mm range, Nikon, Tamron, Sigma, are all good or acceptable. I'd like to add a used Nikon f/2.8, 80-200mm AF, ED-D lens if you can find one. It's my favorite fashion/portrait/event lens. I know some people find them at $300 to $800. A friend of mine found a slightly defective one at $150. I won't worry about the VR because at f2.8 you will be at higher shutter speeds anyway. If you have a monopod, that will also help. If you have another Nikokn body, fit it with a 24-120mm, and then you can say you are now shooting like a pro....you have all the bases covered with a back up. I hope this helps.

Hey, thanks for the good infomation. I shoot with the D5100 for now. It does what I need it too at this point. I am still learning, as a nurse for 25 years you never stop learning. I talked to a retired Pro he told me good equipment makes your job easier if you alredy have knowledge an a good or great eye. He told me I have a natural eye for this. now I am trying too learn the other but don't have time to school. I read all I get my hands on and still find talking to everyone I can try different thing I may not read in a book.

when shooting a horse show its best to try to get most of your images outside full sun( I know that sounds crazy) people don't look good in full sun but horses look great! the shine on there coats gives them dimension, shoot low ( on your knees)if you can. always difficult shooting in an arena never enough light( change your settings it gets grainy) I used the 18x200 to reach out safely to the 1500 lb animal running at meat 40 MPR. there is a beautiful moment of stillness when they fly over a jump but you have to be ready for it to soon or to late and you miss it.
horse show days are long and usually hot and dusty so be ready have fun and watch where you step!!!

I just want to say thanks to all of you for your comments on my question about lenes. Even Charles the photography police from Tennessee a great place to do photography and I have a house in Gatlinburg. The ones of us who have gotten business license thank you for looking out for us;however, I do this more for the love of it and not for money. Not too say, I wold turn down anyone who would like too pay for my work money is money. I personally feel if any one can sell their work goo for you. I don't think I will go hungry and if so I need to find another trade. I work doing many things my dad always said the more you can do the less chance you will be at smeone elses mercy. All 8 of us kids learned many types of work so one well goes dry there is always another to tap. This I hope will be part of my retirement one day. If not I am having fun and away from death / sicknes for a while. It's a awesome break from being a nurse. Thanks everyone. xoxo
