I've been in the market for a new lens the last 6 months. Been toying with the Tamron 18-270. When I read these threads and different opinions I get more confused as to which to choose. Some folks comment "they wouldn't part with the lens", others say "don't waste your money." I've seen some nice sample shots here, I suppose for my needs the Tamron will work. I currently shoot with a Canon 60d, 18-135 kit lens and a 50 mm 1.8
I'm hobbyist and since I have other vices(expensive keyboard musical instruments) my budget can stand about $600 but I think I may wind up spending more. I'm at the point where I think I just may have to rent from borrowlens.com to try the Tamron and maybe some Canon L glass. Wish I never heard the name "L Glass"

My decision was based on opinions here in the Hog and a recommendation from a professional photographer.
I bought my Tamron through Ebay. Brand New from a retailer.

Thanks for your input. :)
Nice pictures! Looks like outside my window this week, what with all the snow and cold that came in.
I am going to go look at both the Tammy 18-270mm and a Nikon 18-300mm Thursday this week at our local camera shop. They are really good about letting you try out the glass on your own body, so I am bringing my camera to try both of those and see what kind of vibe I get :) Nikon also has a cheaper 18-200mm I think which is a little less expensive. I want to take a look at that one too.
One of them is coming home with me ...
Is that $100 rebate still in play on the Tamron for sure this month?

Have you used one of these? How do you rate it?
Took this last night with the Moon and Jupiter dancing. Tamron 18-270 of course.

First off I bought my Tamron 18-270 through ebay. The lens arrived 7 days later. From North Caroliner USA to Western Newfoundland Canada.
I decided to buy this type of lens because I wanted a good telephoto lens without paying huge money. I asked many people about different makes & models. The Tamron came out tops for my budget and needs.
Here is a picture of the moon I took early this morning. Hand held full Zoom through the bedroom window. Given these circumstances my opinion is this Tamron lens is fantastic.

I think the rebate continues to the end of Jan.
My other comments are above mixed in with other stuff.
Sometimes my 'puter' does it's own thing..
Yes, I see your comments within the text. :)
I have to agree, this looks like a fairly decent piece of glass for the money. Had planned to go demo one today, but alas, work got in the way and my customer appointment (within walking distance of the camera shop) was postponed until next week. Plus we got another batch of snow last night, and since the shop is an hour away, I figured just as well. I really do want to take advantage of that rebate prior to end of month if I end up purchasing this Tammy.
How's the weight? Feel pretty balanced? Do you have a battery grip on your camera body? Just curious, as I have one on this D40 now, and it does seem to give a little more balance to heavier lenses.
That other Nikon 18-300mm I'm considering is HEAVY. Since my wife will be using this too, I'm not sure she would appreciate the fact that heavier lens usually translates into better glass / construction. :) May be just a wee bit too much for entire tennis match ...
I have 2, one on my D7000 and one on my D90, other than my Sigma 10-20 which I use occasionally, I rarely ever need to take it off, it is my favorite lens to date

The Tammy weighs in at 19 oz (0.54kg).
I do not have a battery grip on my camera. Although I can take photos 'freehand' I do intend to use my tripod for extra stability. I cannot bare the waiting to get out into the woods to 'shoot' some wild life. Be a while yet as the snow here is over 60cm plus in the drifts, makes walking a little difficult.
Just checking in to see how many shots you've done with the Tamron 18-270mm? I've been forcing myself to take the camera outside on lunch hours (which have only been a few this past month, since it's rained here in MI for what seems like an eternity) and shoot things on my back property. Very impressed with this glass so far ... but never knew how fast birds can be! Just trying to get a good shot of this beautiful red cardinal which discovered a new hangout in our backyard has turned out to be quite the challenge. Practice Practice Practice I guess :)
