My question is an extension of the one ST3v3M answered. If I have all my pics from the chip on my computer how would I #1-transfer them all to an external hard drive: #2 take individual pictures from the lot and put them into specific folders?

I have become computer illiterate since I retired. Can use any help I can get. Thanks

(if I were home I would have my 10 yr old grandaughter help me lol.)

If on a PC - find "My Computer" - click on it twice - you have two windows open - if you put the mouse in the corner, it will let you shrink them so you can see both at once. Select a whole bunch by clicking the left mouse button, go to the end of the bunch, hold down the "shift" key, and click the left button again - they are now outlined - CAREFULLY click AND HOLD the left button, and drag the bunch into the other window.

To make/ use new folders, set the second window to where you want the new folder ("My Pictures", f'rinstance, click the right button - under "New", you will find "New Folder" - righte-click (Or press F2 button, and you can Rename. Then select, drag & drop into the new folder, as before.

you might want to check the lock on the side of the card. If you have any of the post processing softwear like lightroom you can import from your camera.

You mentioned having tried connecting the camera directly to the computer. That's how I download my T3i, though mine are jpeg only.

Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the computer to recognize the USB port. But eventually the Windows import program opens and I can then choose the download, as well as name the folder. I have the default set to delete photos from camera after download. Windows 7 settings:

Control Panel - Programs - Default programs - Pictures - Import pictures using Windows.

Hey Folks,

I have spent the last 5 hours doing everything I could possibly do to get 10 pics from my canon T3i to my computer. I took my old Canon SX120 and snapped off some pics just to test the card reader and the computer no problem I have hooked the T3i directly to the computer I have used the reader card and yes I have the software loaded...I am at the end of my patience with this camera...ANY ideas???

Software installed, but is it the latest & greatest? We had another guy here who upgraded the firmware on his camera and the Windows machine would not play nice until he went back to Canon's website and got all the stuff updated.

I am a firm believer in hooking the camera to the PC rather than pulling the card.

For the T3i:
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/eos_slr_camera_systems/eos_digital_slr_cameras/eos_rebel_t3i#DriversAndSoftware

Select your Operating System and get everything possible under the software heading.

The CD that came with the camera rarely contains the newest software.

If you insist on pulling the card, you may need to get updated drivers for the SD reader in the PC. I found one of my older SD readers just couldn't handle a 16GB card. The one built into my Dell netbook couldn't make sense of it until I hit up Dell's site for updates.

mugwhump,

OK, so your not a computer novice.

Did you install the Canon software that came with your camera from several CDs?

Without the Canon software you should be able to connect the camera directly to your computer, via a USB cable. From there you can see the camera as an external drive, open the directories and transfer the image files like any other computer program. Its not Rocket Science.

Hey mugwhump, you are having quite a time aren't you?

There are a lot of variables here, but let's start with a few -
You Canon SX120 is a 10MP camera while your Canon T3i is a 18 so your files are larger, but... 5 hours?
The next thought then is the speed of the SD Chips you are using in the T3i. Are they the same speed as the ones in your SX120? The faster the better.
Along with that is the speed of your card reader. USB 1.0, USB 2.0, USB 3.0 where the larger is faster. This will be the same for a direct connection to your camera and using a card reader.

You mentioned software? Which?

If you don't mind try this -
Take some photos with your T3i
Turn off your camera
Pull the chip
Put it in a card reader
Plug the reader into your computer
When the popup shows up choose Open Folder To View Files
Windows Explorer is displaying your photos
Click-and-hold Ctrl then A (Select All)
All of your photos are now highlighted
Click-and-hold Ctrl then C (Copy)
Open a New Windows Explorer folder
Click-and-hold Ctrl then V (Paste)
Time it then let us know how it goes.

Along with the time, how many photos, what quality are you shooting at and if you know what is the speed of your card reader and the USB slot in your computer.

When you verify that all images from the flash card have been copied to your hard drive, place back into the camera and format it. It prevents file allocation errors.

Just a quick thought...are you plugging the camera into your computer, turning it on and waiting for it to be recognised? If so have you tried opening the "EOS Utility" software manually before plugging the camera in and turning it on?

If you have not installed the Canon EOS Utility Software that came with your camera you should install it first. Once the software is installed plug the camera into the computer using the cord that came with the camera. Make sure you plug the USB wire directly into the computer and not into a hub or other splitting device. Turn the camera on. I window will pop up and verify the cameras connection. You can then use the download feature in the Canon Utility or simply navigate to the camera's files using windows, Lightroom or Bridge.

-You took pics with SX120 and used card reader to test the PC and it worked.
-You hooked T3i directly to PC AND also tried card in card reader but they do not work.
-You did install software.

Did you turn the T3i ON after connecting it to the PC?

Does the T3i card work in the SX120?

Does the SX120 card or any other work in the T3i?

Does the T3i require a camera menu setting such as:
Tools/Communication/PC connect ? (My Rebel XT does.)

Did a new ICON appear on your homepage screen after installing the software from the T3i discs? If so, double click on the icon to open the Canon program. In the upper left corner should be an icon showing a camera and it should open access for files transfer from your camera to the computer.

All of this is explained in your camera's instruction manual. Please read the manual before operating the camera to eliminate further errors and confusion.

I have a T3I also and I have had problems with the downloading while using the USB cable connected to the computer. I have come to the conclusion the USB port is damaged. The instructions from Canon are very poorly written as to when to connect and when to turn on( which first/order). Canon says they believe I've damaged the port and if I want them to repair it, send it and they will for $220+. I can download without problems when I remove the card and insert it into a card reader or computer directly. Also Canon says that you must not use the USB port on the front/top of computer but the one on the back, it has the correct voltage, the one on the front/top is lower and therefore not correct. That is not in the manual!!!!!
I feel your pain, I spent weeks trying to figure this out. Canon is no help, You bought it and we have done no wrong, it is yours now. By the way, mine started having problems about 11 months after purchase but I did not contact them until the 13 month, to late.

Did you connect the camera directly to the computer? Have you restarted the computer since the installation of the software? What version of windows are you using? The camera is USB 2.0 is your computer USB 2.0?
