Hey Folks,

I have spent the last 5 hours doing everything I could possibly do to get 10 pics from my canon T3i to my computer. I took my old Canon SX120 and snapped off some pics just to test the card reader and the computer no problem I have hooked the T3i directly to the computer I have used the reader card and yes I have the software loaded...I am at the end of my patience with this camera...ANY ideas???

Hey mugwhump, you are having quite a time aren't you?

There are a lot of variables here, but let's start with a few -
You Canon SX120 is a 10MP camera while your Canon T3i is a 18 so your files are larger, but... 5 hours?
The next thought then is the speed of the SD Chips you are using in the T3i. Are they the same speed as the ones in your SX120? The faster the better.
Along with that is the speed of your card reader. USB 1.0, USB 2.0, USB 3.0 where the larger is faster. This will be the same for a direct connection to your camera and using a card reader.

You mentioned software? Which?

If you don't mind try this -
Take some photos with your T3i
Turn off your camera
Pull the chip
Put it in a card reader
Plug the reader into your computer
When the popup shows up choose Open Folder To View Files
Windows Explorer is displaying your photos
Click-and-hold Ctrl then A (Select All)
All of your photos are now highlighted
Click-and-hold Ctrl then C (Copy)
Open a New Windows Explorer folder
Click-and-hold Ctrl then V (Paste)
Time it then let us know how it goes.

Along with the time, how many photos, what quality are you shooting at and if you know what is the speed of your card reader and the USB slot in your computer.

If I had gotten as far as seeing the files I would have been home free... I am a camera novice not a computer novice.

Got a visitor from PA here on a visit/vacation. He put his card into his laptop SD slot and it was not recognized.

I have a small sd card/usb thingie I bought long ago. I put his sd card in the thingie and then into his laptop and all was well. He went to Best Buy and bought one. Now he's prepared for anything.

One thing I asked him was "With a Nikon D90 and a D700, what the hell are you using 2 gig cards for ?" And he's shooting some RAW files also along with JPEG. He's forever changing cards. LOL

Are you sure that your computer has the CODEC loaded for the T3i? The CODEC is different for each of your cameras. It should be located on the CD that came with your T3i but it can also be downloaded from the Canon website. Without the CODEC, your computer doesn't know what the file data is or how to use it in file transfer. Most PP programs have instructions for the installation of this CODEC either from the program CD or the website as well. The T3i is not a brand new camera on the market, so the CODEC is readily available.
I suspect you are running a WINDOWS OS. Go to the start menu and click on "My Computer". Does your computer recognize the SD card as being present when you went to "My Computer" in the Windows start menu? It should appear as a seperate drive labeled "SD card" and any files on it should show up when this drive is opened.

Okay, that being said..... I doubt if it is the camera. If you are seeing photos on your screen, then they are on the SD card. Are you by chance trying to use the same software that you have for your T3i ? If so, there is a high possibility that the Canon format has changed and cannot be used with the SX120. It might have the same name, but may be apples not oranges. Remember, you have a large time gap between cameras.

And, since you are computer aware, the old adage still applies.....If all else fails, read the (expletive deleted) book. Sorry, old Air Force term....

This was my thought Are they in RAW? That would require the camera software to work - your computer's Explorer will not know what they are. The other cANON DOES ONLY jpg, YES?

My question is an extension of the one ST3v3M answered. If I have all my pics from the chip on my computer how would I #1-transfer them all to an external hard drive: #2 take individual pictures from the lot and put them into specific folders?

I have become computer illiterate since I retired. Can use any help I can get. Thanks

(if I were home I would have my 10 yr old grandaughter help me lol.)
