You really haven't done computing till you work on a IBM-1401 using autocoder. Started in 1964 and ended in 2010 when they shipped my job to China.

But as sooooooooooooo many people here know rarely a week or so goes past without

"Hi, I have just bought a camera and want to do weddings what do I need"................

Or

I have been taking photographs for a year and my mates say they are great and I should sell them, how much shall I charge"

The questions in themselves appear and sometimes are fine, but it is like the early days of computing, I have been into IT since CP/M and MS/DOS I was using spreadsheets before most knew whet a computer was, then came along home "toy" pcs and everyone thought they were Bill Gates

I'm not sure I understand the need to criticize rather than help. Better to say nothing perhaps?

Hate to tell you this but you completely missed the point. Those of us on UHH are more than willing to help others to become better photographers. But, have you ever heard the phrase helps those who helps themselves. All to often it is obvious that the person asking a question has made no effort to read their manual, do an Internet search, or any other work to find the answer themselves. The book stores and libraries are full of books and magazines related to just about kind of photography you can think of. As said before, maybe it's the instant education frame of mind at work. Also as earlier said before the advent of the digital age it took a lot of self education, training and knowledge to become a photographer. I still contend that 80 percent or more of those owning DSLRs would not own a SLR in the film era. Being unwilling to do the work and go through the learning process to use such a camera. A friend of mine who is a professional photographer in every sense of the word refers to it as the dumbing down of photography. This does not mean that people are dumb. But that the knowledge needed to be a photographer is much less than before. Lastly, name calling says more about the person making the remarks than it does about the target of the remarks.

Lol...I guess it should be obvious that if you have clarified who you are addressing then I wouldn't have asked the question but whatever floats your boat.

Next time, try quoting who or what you're replying to...just a suggestion.

Just a thought... when I started out I had a lot of people saying that my pictures were great etc. and one man, a pro, who told me not only were they not great but where I was going wrong. I learned nothing from the politeness; I learnt a lot from the honest opinion of a peer.

You can spend your life being polite and not criticize; no one will learn from that. Or you can be objective and critical; people will, if they want, learn from that.

There are many things that distinguish the pro from the amateur; one is the pro is always learning and developing technique and skill, another is the pro invites criticism as a means of identifying areas for improvement.

Photography is a Craft. Just like so many other professions.
It takes practice, knowledge of your tools, the understanding of composition, and practice, practice.
Each area of photography, Candid, Wedding, Press, industrial, wildlife, landscape, etc, all require an expertise and understanding in that particular field.
Some of the people on UHH have those individual levels of expertise and are willing to share so that others may learn.
They share their expertise with us on a daily basis. We learn from each other. There is room for as many persons who want to learn to take advantage of this opportunity.
The UHH is a forum for us to share, to learn, and to enjoy.
Let's not make it a forum for creating discontent, arguments, and, and, and.
Relax, enjoy, post.

I am in the learning stage and I whole heartedly agree with all of you. I am sure not ready to call myself a "professional" photographer. I am working toward becoming one though someday.

The way I see it, If you have to ask "HOW", then you're not ready to "DO"............

Seems like a lot of people forget the "LEARNING" stage...
