seagullSuz Loc: So Cali transplant to Utah

[quote=RMM]Location, history of its construction, the Jewish revolt ending in mass suicide. It's perched way up on a cliff near the Dead Sea, and the surroundings are as bleak as the moon. The Jordan Rift is like a geological cleaver cut. We drove from Jerusalem to Safed via the East Bank, and when we reached the road going down, it was like plunging off a cliff. When we stopped at a village and opened the door of the car, which had air conditioning, it was like stepping into a Turkish bath, heat and humidity like you wouldn't believe. I remember wondering how anyone in their right mind would choose to live there. By the way, you'll probably get to swim in the Dead Sea. It's like swimming in chicken soup. Oily, warm, you can't sink, you can, in fact, sit in it.[/quote

RMM - Thanks for your insights. From what I have read, I am fascinated by the history of Masada. I didn't think about the remote and barren location but should have from the photos. As for the Jewish revolt, there doesn't seem to be any archaeological evidence to corroborate Josephus' writings about the mass suicides...at any rate, I hope that in early May we will not experience the Turkish Bath effect! I think I will get my Dead Sea experience by proxy! I enjoy learning from your experiences.

Seagull, I lived there for 30 years. no problems with the law in any touristic site. in 9 days you will have a bright sun,but you never know- today it rained in Jerusalem. Masada:hot, lots of dust. Jerusalem: big lighting contrast between lighted places and shade in narrow streets. dead sea:hot, protect equipment from highly salty water, your eyes also! Galilee:green&beautiful
have fun!

My last trip was in the days before digital. I got some amazing photos with good old film. With good composition you can take some great photos even with a cell phone. I had a star filter back then and got some neat shots with it. Be sure to post photos when you come back. Have a wonderful trip.

...cactusflower - thanks for your insight. Our guide was born in Israel...has dual American/Israeli citizenship and has been providing tours for 30 years. He has a home here the US and also in Israel. We should have a great time with him. Apparently until two weeks ago, he wasn't able to take his tour vehicles into Bethlehem, but that has changed....we're excited to get into that city. I do have extra batteries and cards and will download each night...I'm only a novice and don't have the camera or lens power of most, but hope to make some good shots with my equipment....also NOT taking a tripod.

I'm sure you were told to bring one skirt or pants and something with sleeves. You need it for some of the sites

I shouldn't have posted that. Didn't mean to take away from your trip. Just my warped sense of humor. Be sure to post some pics. I'd go in a heartbeat if I could.

Gifted One Loc: S. E. Idaho

Gifted One - I'm a newbie to DSLR...have been able to get some nice shots with my T2i....don't have any robust lenses just the kit 18-35, a tele 75-300, and a 50mm...I realize I am limited but for now, those will have to get me through this trip. My husband is not going on this journey, I will be with five other family members...our tour totals 24 people.

I have 60D, T2i, 18-135, 70-300. I think that the 18-135 you will use the most. I am fearless even at 70 but am male and street smart. I have felt more intimidated in SLC than Israel. Beware the woman not in the presence of a man is highly at risk if of the beaten track. There is safety in groups. If I were talking to myself, take old luggage, nothing logoed. Leave the jewelry, simple wedding band. Dress modestly; this is not a fashion show. I like an old backpack that is small. I use well worn in shoes and change regularly. I change socks twice a day. I always take a small amount of TP, sanitary wipes, sanitation lotion with me. I always take the business card of hotel as soon as I register and distribute ASAP in personal areas along with documents and med stuff. Very long flight you are older be aware of blood clots long setting get up and walk. We were heavy screened going out of Newark NJ. I went from Israel to Italy. Hardly checked. You call yourself a seagull so may not apply drugs and drink = trouble. Even being around it. That being said so cool places to hang at night and can get over view. Get and use sunrise set moon table. As has been said drink H2O and flush regularly. We were in a large group and had several med issues pop up because of this. When I am going with anyone I strip my kit to the bare minimum. You probably not use pod or x-flash, but if you do dump covers. Sorry JR1 I think the rain cape will get lost. Get a blow up pillow for plane. Sleep when ever you can. Some times bus driver are better than tour guides. Always ask to take photo. Take balloons for kids. Take a Frisbee in pack to kneel on for low shots. T2 does not have articulating screen. Learn to take shots high and low we did with 35mm. Dress and learn to act like the crowd. Most of the time the good stuff has been built over, shoot the people and their emotional reaction. The Sheppard’s field is still the Sheppard’s field. Look for the story. Down south on the way to Massada I was a water hole ahead of every one and saw an antelope with vey long horns. At Massada look for Army troops, they will run up the snake tail. If you are lucky you can document that.

Always dress and act modestly be mindful of Islamic customs.

You are welcome to PM me if any more specific question. Am just up the road! Good trip.

My wife just got back from a guided tour of Israel. Others have pretty much answered your photography questions, but you might be interested in reading her blog she made of the trip. She made daily reports, and considering she was trying to take notes, take photos and still remain with the group, she made a great report. Lots of information.

Tell your wife she did a great job on her blog, super information and wonderful photos. Can't imagine how she did it all on such a busy trip.

From the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives you can shoot across towards the Dome of the Rock all you like. I had been there first and had these shots. Once I was inside the Old City, I saw the reverse photo op and couldn't resist. I was delayed a little getting reprimanded for walking towards the wall. The rest of my tour went through another gate into a Jewish section because it was getting close to prayer time. I barely made it out as the speakers began blaring the Muslim call to prayer. I stayed closer after that LOL
