Will be on a tour in Israel in a couple of weeks for 9 days... I won't have time to do much 'setting up' shots with tripods and long exposures...tips please to maximize photo opportunities...and those who have experienced Israel (Jerusalem, Dead Sea, Galilee, Capernaum, Masada) please share your specific experiences...what works, what doesn't!.....thanks...

Personally I would be thinking more about

Spare batteries
A charger that works there
Extra cards
monopod
Info on the law and where you can/can't shoot

Camera rain cover just in case you want a photo but it's raining, cheap and take up almost no space

My nephew just walk in. He said shoot like crazy and carry plenty of water.
He spent over a month there. Amazing, if you are young and Jewish the government will pay for round trip flight from the East coast and tour, hotel and food.

Depends on what kind of camera. A zoom lens is handy. So is a wide-angle in tight quarters like the Old City in Jerusalem. A point-and-shoot camera is going to disappoint.

WATCH OUT FOR SAND. One of my cameras barely survived a trip to Israel, and sand got into the mechanism and pretty much ruined it. This was back in the days of film. Keep your camera wrapped up when not in use, and keep a soft brush handy.

Also, you may want to look into a polarizing filter. The sun is brilliant.

Rebride: Wow, great deal for those who meet the criteria...our tour group will provide the water...and I plan to "shoot like crazy"...say thanks to your nephew.

The program is Birthright Israel and it's privately funded. You can apply to go on a trip between the ages of 18-27. You need to have some Jewish background.

I would forget the tripod and bring an 28-300mm lens. Bring blower and cleaning kit especially if you go to the Negev. It doesn't rain in the Summer in Israel.

I go to Jerusalem regularly. On a recent trip I went to Masada and up to Tiberius along the Jordan Valley, via Nazereth. The views and sights were amazing but the light was very hazy. Some filter to minimise this would be good. I have often taken crowd and shop pictures in the Old City and nobody has ever shown any negative reaction. Be prepared for a sensory overload. You will come away with some great pictures.
