My husband has had a "method" for getting his toys (sailboats, cars, guns, guitars) for years. We've been married for 32 years now and I KNOW that when I start seeing a brochure for a particular item on top of the magazine pile in front of the porcelain throne, I KNOW he's set on it. I'll set a Better Homes & Garden magazine on top of his brochure and, lo and behold, that brochure shows up on top of the pile again. Before long, he gets that toy. No surprises. Right now, there's a brochure of a Porche on top of the pile. Lord, help me. It's payback time. I want a Nikkor 70-200 2.8G ED VRII. Small potatoes in comparison! :)

Fortunately, my bride doesn't know a d80 from a D600 and I had UPS deliver it to the office. Used my quiet little "cash stash" for payment so it didn't show up in the budget. Then, of course, a neighbor said, "hey! you got the new D600! Congratulations!" After saying thank you, I calmly broke his legs.

Try to find something that is even more outrageously priced. Then concede that the lens you want would work as a compromise. Your wife will feel that she has won because you saved a lot of money and you win because you got what you wanted after all.
