Had alarm and security companies calling me.
Finally told them I already had security service, they would ask " with who?". My answer was Smith Wesson and Rottweiler. They quit calling.
I usually let them rabbit on a bit then ask how they can be so sure my computer has these problems when I, a Microsoft IT engineer haven't noticed anything.
The next sound I heard is the phone at the other end being put down.
This works for me every time - Except when I can't really be bothered then I just utter two words the second being ".... OFF"

Use to have ttis problem. Asked to be removed from caller list numerous times ,to no avail. BECAME TIME TO TAKE THIS ANNOYANCE INTO MY OWN HANDS. Went to a local hardware store and bought a small hand held air horn. No more calls after a shot of that in the phone. Best 6 dollars I ever spent
I've considered that remedy too. Yesterday received a call about my windows computer, told the guy I don't have one (using Macs these days) and told him he was an "A hole" and promptly hung up on him.
Also thought about wasting time playing around with them to see
exactly what they are fishing for and then give them a lot of false info in response.

Once I realize what kind of call it is I just set the phone on the counter and listen to them trying to get a response.
I'm never horrible to these folks, it's not their fault they can't find a better job.
If it was a choice of doing that, being a dole scrounger or going hungy, then reluctantly, I'd do that
Sorry, I did'nt make myself clear.
I'm reffering to telesales people, not the con artists that this topic opened with.

I thought you were worried about the robots making the calls
(If only I had paid attention in spot-welding class...I could be working for GM)
From reading the various replies it is clear I've missed some fun. Thanks for the reminder and the ideas!
Problem is most of the calls are a recording. A blast from an air horn won't do any good. The do not call list worked for me for years but I've heard there have been changes made. Google "do not call list" and there is plenty of info including some info on scam lists. The robo calls are the worst since there is nobody to piss off.
I do the same thing. Its fun.
I have a very loud whistle I use; works better than no call list

Can't wait to retire so I have time to do this stuff :-)
I had programmed my answering machine message with the 3-tone signal indicating this line had been disconnected - - but seems the robots have been trained to ignore this tech solution.
So now I look at the incoming number. If it is blocked, or a toll free prefix (800, 866, 877, etc) I ignore it.
I don't know anybody in Spokane, WA - so I ignore unknown area codes as well.
If the number is unknown, AND in the local area - I pick up the phone and listen - - if dead air - - I say Duhhh - - if there is then a click and someone starts talking I listen for 10 seconds - - and say Duhhh (repeat as long as it takes) - - with an occasional 'Mama' thrown in for fun.
You can do a reverse look up on Google if you have the number. That way you'll know not to answer. You''ll also see where others have complained about the calls. Just type in the number in the search bar. Of course, that would take all the fun out of it for some of you:)
