I also grew up on LI. The south shore was all swamps at one time. I'm an old "swamp rat" I cold show you some that still exist that would make you expect a dinosaur to come charging out.(Hey that's what I have a camera for!) Actually my kids started on a project photographing these areas but I've been a little lax putting it together. My Avatar is extreme lowtide in a saltmarsh.
Those little towns and villages upstate are just great places to shoot and great places I would think to live. I was very very pleasantly surprised. "The City" would drive me nuts
Like the reflection and fall colors.

I'm from Upstate New York, and I can tell you there are swamps and wetlands all over the place, especially north of the Thruway. That's why there are so many mosquitoes.
Other than that, it's a great place, especially the Adirondacks. Now that I'm retired, I'm planning to move back.
New York State has 2.6 million acres of Forest Preserve land in the Adirondack Mountains, protected by the State Constitution since 1895 as "forever wild forest land" on which the timber cannot be removed, destroyed, or sold. The Northwestern Adirondacks is a canoists paradise. And for those who like mountains, come to the High Peaks near Lake Placid. Nearly 300,000 acres of "forever wild forest land" is also located in the Catskill Mountains. Ya'll should grab your cameras and come!

Sunset on Raquette Lake, 2007. If you look at my avatar, you will see the same group of trees behind me that are in shadow on the left of the sunset photo.
