I've bought a new Canon Rebel T3i. An extended warrantee was offered. I turned it down. Retailer (Best Buy) said I've got 30 days to reconsider. I think they were offering 3 yrs, $15O. Includes annual cleaning, and repair from dropping and getting wet. Deal or No Deal?

I bought the same camera at Best Buy and I got the warranty. My only concern was if it covered my lenses too. (don't think so except the one that came with it) except I got a bundle that included another lense. I think it's worth it for replacing the camera if there's a problem.

I pay $30 a year to state farm for all my camera equipment. They were prompt in replacing a 17-85 EFis zoom lens when I broke it in half, and they cover theft as well. That with Canon repair is all I need.

Thanks, sounds like it's connected to homeowners? Is it? I'll check with the ins. co. though and see.

Your homeowners insurance will cover most of this stuff for "covered causes of loss". This will not include wear and tear and also has a deductible. The only thing I buy warranties for are my kids tablets and ipod's. LOL

If you were so inclined Mack, which has been around a long time (though not without a few horror stories) sells a 3 year plan on Amazon for $25.

Save your money. Learn to be careful and clean and you probably never bring it in for service. No reason why you cannot clean the lens yourself.

I have been using Canon's for over ten years and brought only one back for warranty.

Yes and No. The outside of the body and both ends of the lenses are easy. A small dusting brush gets the bits out of the cracks. Lint-free cloths and lens cleaning solution cleans off the dirt and oil.

Cleaning the sensor is the 'Not easy' button. I have done it for years successfully, but one false move or shutter drop and your camera is junk. So take care of the outside yourself and, in general, let a Canon (or Nikon, ...) cerfitifed shop do the internals of camera body and lenses.

This is clearly a personal choice item...

My rule of thumb... Items that sit on the floor, hang on the walls, or on shelves where they are not likely to be knocked off.... don't need warranties.

Items that are placed in bags, carried, sat on tle floor, can be dropped or dunked or rolled over by a car... I get the warrantry. Laptops, cellphones and my T2i in particular.

There are SOME qualifiers.... I would not insure a $200.00 point and shoot. I likely would insure a $200 cell phone.

Never, ever buy the extended warranties. They charge about ten times more than they are worth.

While you might lose out on one some time chances are you'll have saved much more than you lose by the time you do.

It is the nature of electrical and mechanical equipment to fail early if they are going to fail; i.e. within a month or three. The standard warranty covers that. Then failures go up again many years later as things wear out...far past the extended warranty. So they hardly ever pay off.

Regards,
Larry Leach

I have never had but one extended warranty that i felt paid off. That one was on an electric range. I purchased the same camera from BB and declined the extended warranty package.

Absolutely do it. The money is worth it just to cover the replacement if you break it, drop it whatever.

I have sat and read through all the posts here, most telling how BB did not honor the extended warrenty, I had jsut the oppisite experience with, I bought a laptop from them and a 2 yr extended warranty, I have had it back to them 3 times, the last time, the motherboard and HD were replaced, even sent a new power cord back with it, I will say it took about 3 weeks to get it back but I have had no problems since then, I see after reading this thread I was one of the lucky ones, but for me it was well worth the extra warranty,,,,,my take on this is that if I buy from them again and I will I am sure I will get the warranty, ,,take it for what its worth, thanks to everyone posting on this, I am always interested in hearing how companys treat people,,for the most part its awful not only BB,
