A gift certificate to Barnes and Noble would give a wide choice and maybe permit the purchase of more than one book. If you're feeling especially generous, include a gift membership (10% off everything, renewable annually).
I'v got pretty much all of Bryan Pettersons books and just recieved his latest, 'Exposure solutions' BUT about 80% of the infomation and pictures in this book is allready in his other books. A bit of a waste of money really. But if you havent got any of Bryans books then this one is very good, he's got his own 'magical' way of explaining ..

Hi!
And, again, Welcome to the Forum!
Personal experience - DON'T buy photographic magazines - work out the high % of adverts. The Reviews are usually space saving and thus trivial. Their eye seems to focus on their advertising revenue, which means convincing readers that the latest gizmos and gadgets are essential.
INSTEAD - buy a book - look at the 'From Snapshots to Great Shots' series -'Composition' is an excellent, practical guide. Alternatively, Michael Freeman is an excellent author.
FINALLY, check the price from Amazon.
A magazine lasts until the next one appears - a book is for life!
Well !! I'v just recieved my 'Digital Photo' mag today and there is !!!! 38 !!!!!! pages of adverts in,, I wonder who the mug is,,,,,, Yip your right ''ME''..There's even an advert in for an Ecocamel Shower.... Yes thats right A Shower !!!...I've subbed for a year so I might not sub nxt year,,, But I also get Nphoto for Nikon shooters and it has not got as many adverts in,,,It's very good up to now,,,

Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Photography" Field Guide is excellent choice. About $15 at Amazon. NO ADS
Dis count magazines had a great price on photo magazines
I'd like to suggest Tony Northrup's book "How to create Stunning Digital Photography". It's practical and easy to understand.

You're getting a lot of suggestions, hope you find one.

Welcome to the forum and what a great idea for a friend. Before you run to the bokstore to buy a book or Magazine try your local library. Our library keeps 2 subscriptions for photographers to enjoy, Outdoor Photography and Shutterbug. Additionally check to see if you have a local camera club, the members can be a great source of info.

Bryan Petersons book 'Understanding Exposure' is great as well as all the rest of his books. Scott Kelby's books are great as well, and as everyone else has said National Geographic and Outdoor Photography are awesome. Scott Kelby training online has great video's that cover a multitude of topics
www.kelbytraining.com as well as numerous other less expensive or even free sites online.
there is a great, really great DSLR book for dummies by Mark Holmes that covers everything for your camera and flash, a great read, easy sound advice, I highly recommend.

I too would recommend "Outdoor Photgraphy", but since you are 'in hiding' I don't know if it is readily available to you. Just in case, I have included a link:
