Welcome to the forum. My suggestion would be to go to the local book store and check out all the mags they have and go from there.

If he likes outdoor photography, then "Outdoor Photographer" would be a good choice. There are more expensive magazines available, many from England. It would depend on what brand of camera he uses and how advanced he wants to become.

Here's a good book - http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Exposure-3rd-Photographs-Camera/dp/0817439390/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1364129402&sr=1-1&keywords=understanding+exposure

There is one called "OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHY", however when I went to the website, there wasn't much to see or do. You may have to be a member before you see anything. Just Google outdoor photography magazines and you should find several that would be good for him.

I would get him a subscription to Outdoor Photographer. One of the few photography magazines that actually provide usable and interesting content rather than just advertising.

I'd suggest Scott Kelby's Digital Photography Boxed Set, Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4 -- The boxed set is available from Amazon for approx $40. EXCELLENT resource for a beginner, well written, easily understood and current.

I looked at their site. They don't seem to be pushing subscriptions. I saw nothing about ordering one, although you can buy individual digital magazines.

Not knowing his age, he might be interested in other things there. I got a ebook free from them in the form of pdf.
Well, here's other links I found:
