Can you tell me what type bird is it ? he came flying down on the tree just in front the house
Never see one like that before around here

Thank you

They are common here. Here's one standing beside my fish pond right beside the house. He was intrigued by his reflection in the gazing ball.

If I had to name that bird, I'd pick Harold. He definately looks like a Harold to me.

A Snowy Egret landed in my back yard and ate all of my goldfish. I caught the Egret flying off after he had already devoured about 4 or 5 of my fish and he came back a week or two later to finish off the rest. I removed my pond and planted a grapefruit tree instead.

Thank you Carolina , never see one around theses parts , are they common in Georgia ?

Here is a range map for the GBH:

Thank you for the range map. Now I gotta go find where they are around here. We have a huge CC Bay and a smaller Nueces river bay that they could probably wade in. Ankle deep in some parts.

Peterson has some decent apps for iPad (if you use one) that you can download and use for reference. Search the App Store for Peterson Birds of North America and Peterson Feeder Birds of North America. I have found these to be very useful from time to time. Enjoy!

The Peterson and Audubon are excellent, but are expensive and occupy a tremendous amount of memory. You might want to look at the iBird series by the Mitch Waite Group. Just search for "iBird" in the App Store on your iPad or iPhone. I use iBird Plus (631mb), which I believe cost US$10; there are also free apps in the group and they have regional apps also.

We call it the 4-5-6 Bird: 4' high, 5 pounds, 6' wing spread. They typically feed on fish caught in water no more than 20" deep.

I use a heron decoy next to my pond to keep them away. Since they are mostly by themselves they won't hunt where another one is.

We have lots of them here. Sometimes I go out in the early morning and they sun themselves to warm up. I have focusing prob to, cuz most times are way out and even the 300 has trouble and if i crop it gets worse. Here is one i got unexpectedly. Was shooting an egret on far bank and heard this ear shattering screech and here it came. No chance to change settings. Was truly a point and shoot. LOL

Arrange your decoys so they move in the breeze. Static displays won't work after a while; the birds get used to them. Moving displays are much more effective.
