It's a Great Blue Heron FRENCHY :-D It's a little hard to focus with all the twigs in front of the bird since the camera will focus on the twigs instead. Sometimes spot focusing will help.

I think they can be found anywhere there is a body of water with fish. Perhaps it was stopping over on a flight to a body of water...unless you have some close by.

One of the really fun birds to see. To see one for the first time has to be awe inspiring.

We have blue and white heron living near the pond down the street year 'round. If they're not there, my friend Kathy says that they're looking for a little snack in her backyard koi pond. I, for one, love to watch them soar! So pretty!

Lived on a river here in Oregon and would watch the GBH's fishing. Had one in my refrigerator for a while.

Do you use a Canon? There seems to be an edge distortion on one side of an object I notice also on my older Canons. I wondered if it was my lens. Then maybe shutter snap movement in one direction...

No, I have a D7000 and I was using a 70-300 Nikon lens ,but recently the focusing is slow and sometime impossible when lens is at maximun, have to manually move it back then it is ok , any ideas of what to do

Peterson has some decent apps for iPad (if you use one) that you can download and use for reference. Search the App Store for Peterson Birds of North America and Peterson Feeder Birds of North America. I have found these to be very useful from time to time. Enjoy!

I have to chase a GBH off my koi pond just about every morning. Ran it off at day break this morning.
