If you're careful it should last almost as long.
You have quite an array of lenses. I only have the 18-135, 50 1.8 and 85 1.8 and intend to get the 18-55. I only have the 18-70 because it came on the D70. The better the zoom lenses get the heavier they get. I always wanted to see an air race. I grew up during ww2 and was always excited to see a mustang, P 38, etc.
Dave is right about the bayonet mount. That's the straight up weakness if this lens. It should have been metal but if you're careful you'll be fine. If it does break you can pick up a replacement mount on eBay for under $10. It's just three screws. There was a 18-55vr on my local Craigslist going for only $25 because the mount broke. A quick fix would give you an amazing lens for under $40. Can't beat that...
For several years I used the 18-55 kit lens that came with my D5000. It seemed OK, but as I learned more about photography I became disenchanted with this lens for being too soft. Just for the fun of it, I tried the lens on my new D5200. Wow! Things looked a lot sharper. I'm going reevaluate this lens now to see just how good it really is...when the weather gets warmer 8-)
I use it on my D 90, works fine

Just wondering how the 18-55 vr would perform on the D7100. Ken Rockwell claims it's performance meets and in some way, exceeds much more expensive lenses. Anyone here use it on their D7000/D7100?
I don't have a D7100, but I do use the 18-55 on Nikons D60, D80, and D90. Love it.
I like the 18-55 vr and I uesed it on D50 and D7000, used it for a number of years and it still give me what I want.

Looks sharp on the D5100 too.
