Just wondering how the 18-55 vr would perform on the D7100. Ken Rockwell claims it's performance meets and in some way, exceeds much more expensive lenses. Anyone here use it on their D7000/D7100?

Yep though as a backup, prefer the 18-105

My partner and I each have one.
Rockwell is right. Low price, very crisp and light as a feather. We use them on a D7000 and D90. The main knock is the plastic construction. If you're careful, pick up the camera by the body and don't slam stuff around, you'll be OK. And by the way, the 55mm-200mm kit lens is no slouch either.
We have an array of other lenses too but use these two an awful lot.
Neither are very useful if you often shoot in a coal bin.

Oh and don't assume that because it is a kit/cheaper lens it is CHEAP.

Because it is a kit lens and therefore more are made costs are lower

Thank's PierreH
I intend to go out today and shoot a few frames with the 18-70mm. I've heard it's not quite right for the D7000/7100 If I don't like the results I'll order the 18-55 for better clarity.

Hi JR1. It's most likely better than the older 18-70mm. Thanks for your response.

I have the D7000, and the 18-55mm works perfectly on my camera.

Decent lens for the money. Go to a photography store, hold this lens, take some photos with it then ask to see and use for a few minutes other Nikon lenses for comparison.

I have both and like both. In actual use I don't think you will find much difference in the quality. I think Rockwell likes the 18-55 because it is light to carry around and the focal length suits him. He seems to like shorter focal length lenses. I like the 50 to 70 range a lot and don't mind the extra weight. You need to look at the kind of shooting you will do and then decide. Like the guy said if you don't do a lot of shooting in low light (the coal bin) you will do fine with either lens. - Dave

I have the 18-70 and used it as a walk around lens on my D70 on and off for 7 years. Very handy, no faults. But no VR, I guess when I got it VR was not available so I didn't miss it! Doesn't go very close up.

But the key to the question is would it do well on a D7000 or even D7100 body with lots of megapixels? My guess is you would find it limited. I would not buy it. It's successor the 18-55 is almost bound to be optically better, and with VR too it is really worth trying out, as recommended above.

I have an 18-55 VR kit lens that came with my D5000. Thought I would upgrade so I bought an 18-105 VR.
A year ago I bought an D7000 body only. Mainly use the 18-105 VR or 70-300 VR on the D7000. I do not think the 18-105 is any sharper than the 18-55, and size wise is larger and heavier.
My $.02.

I use it on 1 of my D5100 a few times now...and at 18mm if your a little to close you'll get some distortion...other than that its a very nice lens.
