The bird is in the shrike family. You must have a feeder near by. These guys take down small song birds for a meal. They also fly like bullets. Good catch, to bad about B&W.

I agree.,,,,color would have been much better..and needs to be much sharper...bird photography is a tough subject..needs lots of practice...and that sharp eye, sharp beak all important..

I think it is a Northern Shrike. Where was this photo taken. The Northern or Grey Shrike seems to have a shorter bill.

I remember in the book "Miss Lonelyhearts", there was a character named Shrike. It was foreshadowing because the Shrike impales his victims on a thorn. Nathaniel West wrote that book and "The Day of the Locust."
