Hi Ms Maine,

Wish I could join on this idea, but can't swing another Charleston trip in April. I posted some pics from a walkabout back in January while in town there. Looks like some good ideas already have been added. I'd also suggest: the Yorktown aircraft carrier, the cemeteries at St Micheal's and St Philip's, around the Battery at 6am to 8am, around Rainbow Row at dusk or a partly cloudy / sunny morning, and long walk down Meeting Street either going toward the water or from the Battery to Market. Enjoy! Oh yes, the ferry out to Fort Sumter has great opportunities on the water and at the fort. /paul

Great suggestions, looks like I may need to extend my visit. Where are your photos posted?

Hi, I would suggest taking one of the carriage rides that are offered as they will take an one hour tour of the city, then later you can go visit some sites that interested you. Also, catch the Battery area, many older homes that you see in Civil War books.

Try these areas too if time permits; Boone Hall Plantation (filmed parts of North and South here), Drayton Hall, Middleton Place, Magnolia Gardens all offer great photo opportunities.

Hope this helps and enjoy your trip.

For your information, there are actually 4 carriage rides.
Each ride has a different route so the blue blood locals aren't incovenienced with the carriage traffic.
If you do take a carriage ride ask the guide which route you are taking. If you have the money & time you might want to take several carriage rides.
SOB means south of broad st. SNOB means slightly north of broad street. Two different types of the rich blue bloods.
I highly recommend a tour of the Calhoun House.
Another place to visit is outside the city limits, that being Cypress Gardens in Berkeley County ajacent to the Cooper river. Its about 20 miles north of center city.
Enjoy the sites of the Holy City. Bill

Awesome photo and great suggestions. Still looking for an experienced photographer to accompany me on at least one photo walk. Will be staying on Isle of Palmes. How is that for photography?

This forum has some nice functionality that isn't obvious to the new user. You can click someone's name, go to their profile, then go to the topics they've created. A quick way to find the pictures posted and questions / answers several experts are discussing. My intro profile from Feb 2013 has a few other Charleston pics. I haven't made it to a plantation in the area and will the next time. /paul

If you love food, you'll have to eat at:
1) Husk - http://www.huskrestaurant.com/
2) S.N.O.B. (Slightly North of Broad) - http://www.mavericksouthernkitchens.com/slightlynorthofbroad/

My wife and I spent our first year anniversary there not long ago and had a fabulous time. We stayed at the Anchorage Inn in the French Quarter. It's within walking distance of many great sites as well as the two restaurants I mentioned.

Have fun.

As far as resturants there is a super one at breech inlet which is at the bridge between sullivans island & the isle of palms. Boathouse resturant.
Downtown, penninsula grille, magnolias & blossons.
Husk is also great.
Enjoy your visit, Bill

Since you are staying at the Isle Of Palms, there is a fort to visit on Sullivans Island.
Its a small version of Ft. Sumter & is 10 minuites from the Isle.
Also on the north end of the isle of palms is a marina where you can get some great shots.
By the way what camera are you bring to Charleston??
