Well, this isn't your typical classified, but here goes. I will be in Charleston in April for a wedding and would like to go on a photo shoot with someone that knows the area well and also can be a "teacher" for me. If anyone knows someone willing and able to this, my email is ljrogoff@gmail.com.

Hi, I would suggest taking one of the carriage rides that are offered as they will take an one hour tour of the city, then later you can go visit some sites that interested you. Also, catch the Battery area, many older homes that you see in Civil War books.

Try these areas too if time permits; Boone Hall Plantation (filmed parts of North and South here), Drayton Hall, Middleton Place, Magnolia Gardens all offer great photo opportunities.

Hope this helps and enjoy your trip.

I will be there on 4/20- is that your weekend? If so, I know of a fun beach-shootout planned for that weekend... But yeah, you can't go wrong in the Battery. Just take your camera and comfy walking shoes and head South of Broad. Lots of gorgeous historic homes, gardens, brickwork in driveways, fountains, window boxes, antique doorways- I could go on and on!

Getting to the beaches and/or plantations will take a lot of time b/c of traffic, etc. If you stay downtown, you can cover a LOT of ground just on foot. The markets on Saturday AM are a good place for street photography. Check out the main Market (on Market Street) and then swing by the market at Marion Square. People everywhere!

And be sure to take advantage of the street trolley downtown. It covers a lot of area. And it's free! So after you walked 10 miles taking photos, you can at least get a quick ride back to the car.

We were there several years ago. Two great photo ops are the tour of Fort Sumter (requires a short boat ride to get there and back), and a walking tour of historic downtown Charleston. The walking tour lasted two hours, and was at a reasonable enough pace to allow for photo ops along the way.

Great city! Just don't mention the Civil War. Down there is is still the "late unpleasantness".

That's a really good idea, and there are lots of photogenic shops and churches nearby also. The Gulah (spelling?) women are normally at the markets making their wonderful baskets, and there is lots and lots of color and texture in those markets. Have fun on your trip and post some photos for us when you get back. Oh, and welcome, by the way.

Hi Ms Maine,

Wish I could join on this idea, but can't swing another Charleston trip in April. I posted some pics from a walkabout back in January while in town there. Looks like some good ideas already have been added. I'd also suggest: the Yorktown aircraft carrier, the cemeteries at St Micheal's and St Philip's, around the Battery at 6am to 8am, around Rainbow Row at dusk or a partly cloudy / sunny morning, and long walk down Meeting Street either going toward the water or from the Battery to Market. Enjoy! Oh yes, the ferry out to Fort Sumter has great opportunities on the water and at the fort. /paul

For your information, there are actually 4 carriage rides.
Each ride has a different route so the blue blood locals aren't incovenienced with the carriage traffic.
If you do take a carriage ride ask the guide which route you are taking. If you have the money & time you might want to take several carriage rides.
SOB means south of broad st. SNOB means slightly north of broad street. Two different types of the rich blue bloods.
I highly recommend a tour of the Calhoun House.
Another place to visit is outside the city limits, that being Cypress Gardens in Berkeley County ajacent to the Cooper river. Its about 20 miles north of center city.
Enjoy the sites of the Holy City. Bill
