I don't know how long Atchy has been here. But for me, I have been here a very short time. Until I was reamed out the first time, I did not even know about the search engine. I never paid attention to the fine print at the top of the page. It never ceases to amaze me how a person can be kind and offer advice one moment and be brutally cruel the next.

Do you agree that Photoshop is ruining landscape photography.

I think that in the future, there should be two fields of photography- pure, right out of the camera, and pp'd. Then there will be no arguments. For myself, photography IS art and so if you can take a photo and then make it something better/different, then do it. It's rather like a painting. You can paint what's there, or you can 'interpret' what you see. The canvas artist interprets what he/she sees with colors, lines used, types of paint, etc, and so the photo artist should be able to do the same. But change hurts many people and so they fight it until they can't fight it anymore. But change is inevitable, and so this question will be resolved soon enough.

Why is it ruining landscape photography, it has been used since the days of Ansel Adams. The gentleman in the article added features to his shot that wasn't there originally, think that might be why he was disqualified.
I would have to say absolutely not.

For those of you who did not look at the web page that was with the question. A photographer entered a photo that had lots of PP work done one it and won a photo contest. After screams of foul by many "purist photographers" his prize was taken away. The poster asked specifically what was thought about this action. Seems to me that this is new ground and could not be looked up. My take on it is that if their were not rules about PP that he should have kept the prize if the judges picked it. I think that in landscape photography that less is best. In my opinion many landscapes that PP is done on are much too vivid. - Dave

Dave, love your thinking! What comes out of my camera is what I've taken and what I have. If it is not to my liking, DELETE and move on. I think I may get one or two very good photos (in my mind) out of every 40 or so taken. Admittedly I will crop occasionally but that's it. That's just me and I'm good with it.

Hey Atchy, I'll answer your question:) I'm not a pro at photography or digital manipulation. I've never been trained in the art of photography; just dabble here and there. I read a lot; some theory, but honestly theory overwhelms me. I've also read much about digital manipulation and it seems many purists really don't like it. Since I'm not a photog. purist, I have to admit that I like to experiment with manipulation. I look at it as an art form. Painting and drawing is something I have more experience with and that's probably why I enjoy digital manipulation. However, I also have to admit that manipulation has also taken away from showcasing the raw talent of gifted photographers.

if people didn't ask questions, rude and ignorant people like you, JR1 would just find something else to bitch about........i say ask away. someone is always willing to give advice and do it without malice or rudeness, and if you don't like it JR1, just keep quiet and move onto something else. i don't think anyone will miss your opinion.

Unfortunately there is no such thing as the first category. All pictures are processed at least twice: first in camera and second in whatever you use to make a print or display on a computer.

That was true with film as well. Your selection of film provided the first processing of the light and the developing process the second.

This is all about degree of processing.

If the painting you are referring to is Wood's "American Gothic" the farmer and his wife are Wood's dentist and the dentist's sister. - Dave

dragonswing; It is a matter of education, as you should know is often thought that the passing of a university, college or school education Photography ensures education . When in fact the bus and subway pass by them, but do not make the bus or metros universitary

I guess I was guilty of Photoshopping when I pushed tri-x to ASA 1600 back in the film days :-)

No it is not. But may well become as such.
Yesterday in the Daily Telegraph newspaper here in the UK.
there is a report of the winning entry of the "Landscape Picture" of the year being cancelled and withdrawn due to "over photoshopping"

That coupled with "National Geographical" mags decision not to accept any future photographs that have Post Processed.

Gives food for thought
