The D3100 is a great entry level camera. The D7000 is a great semi-pro camera. End of story.
I do not see why anyone would pay to change their D7000 for a D7100. Fols will, though.
Second statement 100%.
£400 more here for almost no change in spec

There are apparent features of the D7100 that are not on the D7000 that look attractive (1) not having the anti-aliasing screen (2) better weatherproofing (3) more resolution for cropping without loss in the photo. I am thinking of getting the D7100 as a second body. I was thinking of getting the D800E as I have the D800 just for the anti-aliasing filter removed, but now I can spend less and get it on the D7100. I shoot FF lenses on the D7000 and will on the D7100 as well.

Don't understand "Full frame or cropped?" Neither camera is full frame. :~)

Will the D7000 or D7100 take better photographs than my D3100
What do I really get by going to the D7000 or D7100?
While we are at it what is the real benefit to a full frame vs. the cameras mentioned above.
Thank you
1. On a computer monitor, I really doubt that you would see much difference, if any. However, the more you enlarge, the more benefit you will have from the sensors with more megapixels.
2. The D7000/7100 will give you more shooting choices and features. Better build. Heavier. Larger.
3. Having a full frame that is easily identified as a full frame will make you more popular down at the camera club.
I actually just purchases a refurbished d7000 body from adorama (you can get them now for tax season for $750). I did use (and still own the 3100).
I haven't had the camera long enough (maybe about a week now) to comment on picture quality but I do agree it depends on the person behind it. However though, the features and what you can actually do with this camera to help aid in doing better photos is great. I've been reading up and researching reviews on the camera for a few months now.
I plan on taking it out this weekend to get to know the camera and button placement, features, ect......so i'll be sure to repost with my experience!
I have found MT shooter to be one of the most knowledgable Nikon users on UHH, and even went to my D800 after reading some of his posts, and have never regretted that move. The move to FF should not be taken lightly, as it might also lead you to desire to upgrade some of your lenses, not a cheap step, but the difference in the quality of the pics is incredible! I moved from the d300 to d800, and the iso and cropping ability alone makes all the difference in the world. Best of luck as you make your decision.

If the upgraded AF system on the new D7100 is truely better, I will purchase one for just that feature alone.

No, those cameras will not take better pictures. You have to do that, however they have the features that will allow you to take better pictures. Comments above will provide adequate subjective info. This link compares the features of the D3100 and the D7000. The D7100 is not yet up on he site.
