One of my standard things with ANY portrait session is to make sure with the strobes/flash off, that I get a black frame. THAT way I know all the light is from MY setup. So I usually am setting my main light up to be correct at 1/250 at f8. I take a shot at that with only the ambient lighting and make sure there is nothing on the image. Now I know all the light will come from my setup.

Of course using low-power continuous lights this can be an issue as almost any ambient will contaminate your set. That is why flash is so much more versatile.

Good tip, Captain, thank you. In our setup, (it's my daughter's little home studio I'm helping her in), there is a window to contend with, but it's well blocked to prevent any extraneous light from entering. Sounds like a great way to make sure.

My required daily reading UUH. When you are into lighting, I need education. I want to understand soft box and how to use off camera flash. I learn a good bit from my daily read; however is a publication on lighting that would give me a better understanding. Thank you in advance. You must tire of the amateur questions.

I have ordered a photo book from Great Coursrs. Book and CD. I have used their material in math to help my grand children. Really good. We'll see how this book is on sale--$254.00 to $70.00

Thank you, I will try that. I wonder, should I remove just the diffuser or also the soft box? I'll try it both ways. I hesitated to do so because the subject is female, but she is partial to that lighting form. I'm from 'the old school', where we used continuous light. Still learning about studio strobesl Your replies are appreciated.[/quote wrote:

Only do it with bare lights to get them positioned...then diffuse them again :)

And if you are just learning with strobes...it helps to be tethered to a laptop so you can see in real time...what the effect of the lighting is....

If you tether into Lightroom you can see and adjust and keep snapping until you are satisfied...

See my screen shot ...

Some good suggestions. I'll give it a shot, although I've never tethered before. First time for everything, eh?

Yep...once you tether...you'll love it.

You can buy a tether cable for less than $5.00 at Monoprice.com that works just fine.

I recommend using a "jerk stopper" too so the cable won't get pulled out and ruin the camera's USB jack.

Do you remember which one you purchased $5.00 is pretty cheap are they any good.

Couldn't find a tether cable at monoprice.com
Do you need software to use it?

Study the much missed Dean Collins....instead of a fill flash use a fill white reflector....use the second flash as a back light....use a plastic mirror for a hair light...two lights-great stuff...simple
