Like all of us who love taking photos. My gear, all of it. This last summer I drove From Portland Oregon to up state NY. twice in one month. Different routes too. Took lots of photos and seen some fantastic things.
I love our great nation and all that she contains!

For vacations and business trips I take the Canon 7D with the 28-300mm F3.5-56 IS. I may eventually replace it with the Canon SX40 HS.

The important thing is that if you are traveling anywhere that your gear be inconspicuous. Don't advertise with bags marked Canon or Nikon. Put those bags inside old scruffy duffel bags or something. I usually put them in a rolling backpack. I take a point and shoot with a larger zoom range and an SLR with 28-300 lens if I am traveling lighter. I think two cameras are better than one because I am paranoid about one breaking down in some way or I might drop it off a cliff accidentally.Take a flash of some sort. Those on the cameras are ok, but usually not strong enough to cover much territory. It really depends on where you are going, how much you have to carry the gear and how you are traveling. If I am taking my car, I take pretty much everything i've got.

I guess it depends on whether you drive, fly, or sail. When flying, weight is a big factor. Tripod is a must, but in a pinch you can do without as long as your lenses are fast. I just returned from a trip to San Diego and Palm Springs, CA. I use a Nikon D5000, and took a 10-24mm (f2.8)for landscapes and tight positions, a 35mm (f2.4) for general purposes, and 70 - 210 mm kit zoom (f4-5.6) for my lenses. I also took a 2x extender for the 35mm and the zoom. Take extra batteries; a cleaning kit; and as many SD cards as you can. Storage is an entirely different matter. Depending on the length of your trip you might need both a laptop computer and an external hard disc with card reader.

I have a Low Pro shoulder case that I put everything in, including camera. This is for driving trips, When I'm out shooting , I also have a fanny pack that I put my flash, x-tra batteries, cards, and lenses in (50 mm & 18-70mm). Also in the fanny pack is a Kenco 1.5 teleconverter that works quite well with the 70-300mm lens. Obviously, I take mostly scenery shots. On the camera I will have a 70-300mm lens as a rule. Have not flown with camera gear since 9/11....can't say what I'd carry then.

For Europe, 1 DLSR and a short to medium zoom, 2x tele extender. 1 wide angle if you can fit it in your pocket. Invest in a good strap like an optec and lose the "steal me" strap. Carry everything with you...always. I put gaffers tape over the brand name and model. Do not carry a bag...makes you a target. Yeah, I'm paranoid...but it is hard to replace the stuff on vacation. Swap/download cards daily and don't leave the computer in your room.

As I have aged, I take fewer things and fewer photos. At some point, I realized I was spending too much time looking through a lens instead of being in the moment.

So I take a small point and shoot. My old Sony DSC W50 is my preference over several P&Ss I own. It takes great photos and has a viewfinder (is that the term for the eye hole?). I rarely use the screen to frame shots ... mostly just for closeups or artsy composition. The viewfinder is the only way to compose a shot in really bright light.

Essential to that, I have a case for it that slips on my belt. It is thus out of sight under a sweater (keeping me from looking too much like a tourist), but very easy to pull out for a photo.

I take what ever gear I want and a direct to dvd recorder to off load all my work at the end of the day. The ability to off load without needing to edit my stuff until I get some free time at home is fantastic. Forget the computer.
I shoot a lot off Avchd video so it's necessary even with the 5 memory card. Then everyday I can format the card and start all over. I make 2 disc sometime 3 just as back up.

I carry Nikon D80, tripod, 18x270 tamron lens and a micro lens. I packed the tripod in checked bag and the rest was in carry on. Of course there's extra cards and batteries in carry on along with charger .

Two cameras...Minolta 7D (a real tank, but it works and fits my big hands), and a Canon SX30IS point and shoot. A Bogen 3221 tripod and ball head. My carry around bag is small, one camera, light meter, a few filters, the usual spare cards, batteries, and a small flash. I do have a Pelican case which holds everything not in the small bag. The beauty of the Pelican case is I don't have to worry about piling stuff on top of it for the trip. We drive about 1000 miles each way.
