It was quite clear what the person was trying to say. The problem is that he did not answer the question. The OP didn't ask how difficult it was or what percentage of photographers are successful. He asked how money can be made. So to rephrase for the more dense, what do the successful photographers do to make money (aside from the silly comment: sell your cameras). A lot has to do with what type of photographer you are. Do you do architectural? Portraiture? Landscape? Places of Interest? Abstract? Money can be made in stock photography, exhibits, in the case of model photographers, doing portfolio shots for models, editorial shoots, holding workshops. Competition is tough but at least those are some ways to make money as a photographer which is what the OP was asking in the first place. Maybe you feel satisfied being in the 99% that don’t make money. ..and your response provides great insight why you are part of that 99%. Some of us enjoy being in the 1% that does.

It can be a slow agonizing process to get to the point of being successful enough to make a living at it. Like was stated earlier "Don't give up your day job." Like with pretty mush everything if you want it badly enough work hard at it and expect some set backs. If a set back stops you completely you don't want it bad enough.

Actually the OP doesn't need to lighten up. The idiots who can't answer a basic question without trying to be smart asses need to lighten up. His question was very easy to answer. He didn't ask the percentage who did it or how hard it is. He just asked how does one go about it. And as is so common on the web anymore, fools of all kinds ignore the question and start editorializing. When someone says welcome to the real world...it's more accurate that in the real world you deal with asses who do nothing to actually try and assist you. And the quote from A Few Good Men is totally off base since the comments never addressed his question. They were just juvenile.

Yes it can be slow and agonizing. And you are correct that you have to be able to overcome obstacles. But if it were easy, everyone would do it!

who pi$$ed in your cornflakes this morning?

Get over yourself, life is hard. Making money as a professional photographer is hard, making enough money to quit your "day job" and focus on photographer full time is well tougher than hell to put it mildy.

I'll answer the OPs quesition pretty directly.... apply to istockphoto.com, upload your 3 samples, once approved (you might have to resumbit a few times, they are pretty picky about every aspect of your image). Start uploading as many of your images as they will allow and approve. Sell 2 images (this could take a week or it could take 5 years), look you know have made a buck thirty before taxes. There you go you made a buck!

now how much time, effort and money did that buck take you? Ya. that was easy and well worth the effort.

You need to build a portfolio, get a company like Getty Images to pick you up, then start selling workshops on how to make photographs that sell.

WOW, some of you guys really take yourselves very seriously. It was an easy question, I was only looking for some suggestions on how some photographers make money doing what they like to do. In response to a simple question I got hit with a bunch of "wing nuts" going off about how little I know about photography. They were rather sarcastic to say the least. What's wrong with you guys? In the past I'd chalk it up to you were spending to much time in the dark room sniffing the chemicals. May be you get high licking the computer monitor, I don't know but you sound like a bunch of crazies to me. To the few people who answered my "simple" question, thank you, your advice and suggestions were very good and I will act on some of them. To the rest of you wing nuts try working with your drugs not against them.

Good for you, what you have to remember though is that we see on a regular basis such questions as...

"I have just bought a camera and my friends say I am good, how do I start a business".

And often the groan "not another pro beginner" can be heard all around, when some of us have been into photography for 40 years.

I did say post some photos here but you never did.

I have been into photography for 40 years, only last years as my disabled sons wanted to join in I turned more serious, see my site, and I make countless mistakes.

However after a year of shooting surfers and giving shots away, doing free unpaid charity work and weddings at realistic prices I now have a nice living including contracts with charities from lottery funding.

As me specific questions and I will be happy to reply.

Right now you're pissing in my corn flakes. If you feel that posts that do nothing to answer the question is fine and normal behavior then you accept the rudeness that has become so pervasive. I read a thread that looks interesting and instead of good posts I read a bunch of crap. And I have to read a lot of it before I post a response. I respect those whose posts further the conversation and I reject the fools who do the opposite. Deal with it.

A portfolio is not like the old days. An on-line presence is a must whether your own web site or a photo hosting site. You have to be able to post your work so you can direct others to it. Decide if you want to specialize in let's say portraits or weddings or maybe commercial photography.
Of course you can do it all but I found it better to specialize. Word of mouth is a good form of advertising and is cheap. If people are praising your work and telling others it better than a yellow page ad. Have professional looking business cards printed and hand them out like candy on Halloween. Show your work in local competitions or at an art guild. There are all kind of ways of self promotion. Ok, that's a little more positive and constructive. Maybe some of you will quit your bitchin' now.

Use "quote reply" instead of just "reply" so everyone knows what the hell you are replying to. Go finish your cornflakes.

The comments I respond to already went off the rails. I guess you don't grasp that. You should be more concerned with people who create the problem and not those who call them on it.
