I've owned, and still own a lot of cameras and the D7000 is in my opinion the best digital camera for the money ever offered. They are well under a grand now.

Best camera I've ever owned and wouldn't part with it even if I ever decided to go full frame. This has all the bells and whistles I'll ever need in a DX format---I'll take it to my grave. Happy b-day and hope you love your new camera.....

Happy Birthday! Boy I bet your wife didn't see that coming! Many cameras that are intimidating at first end up being simpler to use since many times all the extra buttons give you immediate access to functions that normally require scrolling through a menu. Once some of these hidden feature are dragged out of the menu to the forefront you may find yourself a more powerful photographer

Happy b-day and welcome to the hog. Great photo of your dog. Like many others here I use a D7000. It's a great camera. I like it so much I'd buy another one to use for a backup if I didn't already have a D5000 filling that roll. Like others have already suggested, get a book or field guide and learn how the controls work and what the camera can do. Have fun with it and post your photos.

I turned 55 today and my wife suggested that today we could do whatever I wanted to do. I suggested that we go to a new camera store in our area that I had not been to yet. That might not have been a good decision. I was really frustrated with an ongoing problem on my Sony a230. I had been thinking about upgrading anyway for quite a while now. After talking to the sales person for about a half an hour and being able to play with all the nice things he had, I was beginning to fall in love with the Nikon D7000. The camera came as a kit with the 18-300 lens. I asked him if he had a 28-300 lens since I had read many good things about this lens and had heard some of you guys say nice things about this lens. When the sales person said that I could exchange the kit lens with the 28-300 and that he would give me two hundred Dollars off the price of the lens alone if I bought it with a camera, I was pretty much hooked. So I bought the camera with the 28-300 FX lens. Now I found out that I really have a lot to learn. This is one of the first shots I took with the camera. I'm very happy; but also a bit overwhelmed by the complexity compared to my Sony.
