I have been on several photo walks and had a great time. Go Learn, get you feet wet. They are all different. If they have a good team leader, for the walk talk to them and see if you can pal around with anyone to learn. I was able to pal around for part of a walk with an experienced photographer and learned a lot. He saw I missed and I saw a thing or two he did not shoot. It was a great time. Enjoy.

My experience has been that seasoned amateurs are always more than happy to help newbies.

Just go for it. As you know from going there, people have all kinds of cameras from the smallest point and shoot to the largest. I am sure everyone would be glad to help or answer your questions.

While at Wakodahatchee Refuge yesterday there was a poster up for a Photo Walk on Feb. 27th. To register for the walk you needed send email. I am new to photography and I would like to go but not having a lot of photo skills or expensive gear I'm afraid I would be out of my element. Have any of you ever gone on a photo walk that could tell me what I could expect? They will close the Refuge from 7:30 AM until 11:00 AM for the walk.

In 1962 there was a photograph contest...

$ 10,000 prize....

Hundreds of photographers of all ages and experience placed a photo in the contest.....

Winner: a eleven year old boy using a brownie box camera
and shot a black and white photograph out of the side window of a propeller air plane of the right side engine on fire....

No experience, no expensive camera and or equipment...

Take the walk, take what camera you want...

Look and if you see some scene or subject which "touches" your inner you... take the shot and "enjoy"...

Photography is between your subject and the inner true you....

I got the registration email and now hoping I get in. Its limited to the first 15 people who register. If someone cancels then they contact the next person on the list that registered. Got my fingers crossed that I make it in. Thank you all for your encouragement.

I suggest you go on the walk and watch listen and learn. They all should have something to share and something to learn

Agree. You won't learn to swim if you don't get in the pool. Good luck!! :D

Suzanne,

I have been on several structured "photo walks" and a lot more that were unstructured. I haven't taken many pictures. It is worth going just to watch and learn. Plus, you'll get to meet the most interesting people. Go, even if you only take a picture or two. It's really worth it.

I've never been on such a thing, in fact I've never heard of one. However, I suspect that nearly all of the people there will be friendly and more than willing to share experience and advice as long as you are willing to ask for it or ask questions. And if any jerk tells you to bug off or ridicules you or any question you ask, walk off and don't look back because they won't deserve a response. And chances are, anyone that cocky is either no count as a photographer and think they are, or they are good but so full of themselves that if they trip and break their leg, they better have a cell phone because no one there is going to lend them a hand. Although plenty of people may gather around to have a good time taking snap shot of them writhing around.

Just quick update on the walk. I got confirming email that I did get in. I'm really looking forward to meeting other photographers and learning all I can from them. I know that I can go to Wakodahatchee anytime by myself its only 10 miles from my house. But to be able to meet others with similar interests and skills to me will be a great learning opportunity. I will let you all know how it went and hopefully posts some shots after the walk on Feb. 27th.
