While at Wakodahatchee Refuge yesterday there was a poster up for a Photo Walk on Feb. 27th. To register for the walk you needed send email. I am new to photography and I would like to go but not having a lot of photo skills or expensive gear I'm afraid I would be out of my element. Have any of you ever gone on a photo walk that could tell me what I could expect? They will close the Refuge from 7:30 AM until 11:00 AM for the walk.

I've been on a couple of photo walks and they were all a bit different. One was more of a social event than anything else and allowed me to get to know other photo buffs and talk shop. Another was pretty intense with the participants solely focused on taking shots and couldn't care less about the people with them. Another had a mixture of the two.
Hard to say what this one is. Why not email the organizer and let him know you're a beginner. I'm sure he wants the walk to be a success so he'll probably be pretty honest with you.
I suggest you go on the walk and watch listen and learn. They all should have something to share and something to learn

zuzanne,
Nothing ventured nothing gained, Go for it, and like the man said listen watch and learn, oh and take some photos!
I have emailed and asked for info on the walk and explained that I am a new beginner to photography. I hope that I can go as I would love to watch, learn and shoot with other photographers. Thanks all for your input.

C'mon, Suzanne, I've seen your wacodawhatsitcalled pics before and you have nothing to worry about. After hanging around here a few months you're probably up to par with any of the other walkers. Just enjoy!
photowalks are fun and a great experience. I have done 4 or so, each one I have been one there is a range of photographers from those with camera phones all the way up to top of the line DSLRs and all the lenses he could carry.
What I have found on the walks is: most of the people are there to have fun, take some pictures and share their love of photography. They will walk with you, talk and share pointers, they will also leave you to your own as you snap away. It's what you make of it, I tend to be a little of both types when it comes to photo walks, I gravite to those that seem friendly, walk and snap along with them, sharing info and just chit-chatting and if something catches my fancy I hang back and get what I want.
Most of the photowalks I have been on also have a meet up time and location where everyone gets together after the walk and just sits around and talks. I love that part of the walk. You will be amazed how quickly you make friends. :)

Suzanne, go with your most appropriate set-up.
You may turn out to be the most experienced one there. But for your sake I hope not, so that you may learn.
Either way, any time spent in the great outdoors, is a good time.
You get an A+ for reaching out and expanding your photographic horizons! Please give us a report... and maybe even a photo. Events like this will stick with you for a lifetime.

Agree with the above responses. I signed up for a Photo Walk for shooting Washington DC monuments at sunrise. About 25-30 photographers showed up with a wide range of experience and equipment. I didn't get the sense that there was any competition or judgements of others. Everyone was just glad that they weren't the only photographer crazy enough to show up at 6:00am on a cold morning.
Thank you all for you words of encouragement. Have not heard back from them in response to my email yet. I will keep you all updated on how it goes.

Zuzane, you have a super avatar picture there.
