My daughter had a similar situation. It is the operator that takes the picture, the camera is just the tool. It is just like a painter. It is not the paint that makes the picture great, it is how the person used the paint. And the offer to help her with her camera

It is the "cook and not the stove." In that case it is the photographer not the camera. Having a good camera helps but without the photographer's experience and knowledge, the camera won't do it.
Besides I've seen lousy photos from DSLR's and great ones from point and shoots. Never put the machine over the power of the human brain.

I understand what youre trying to say I just think that some of the analogies thrown around here are just silly. The fact of the matter is I dont care how good Sitting Bull was with a bow if you give him warped arrows he wont hit anything. I played professional baseball and Id have hated to try and play shortstop with a catchers mitt. Better equipment means better results, assuming you know how to operate the equipment.

Yep. All this talk about the camera makes no difference, and it is all down to the photographer, is simplistic nonsense.

I haven't read all the posts yet, but you might like to try something like this:
"Thank you. I'm glad you like my pictures. But I am a little surprised by your willingness to change cameras. It took me a long time to learn how to use the Nikon. I've seen some of the pictures you have taken with your Canon and they're very good. Obviously you've come a long way in getting your Canon to perform just as you wish. If I had to start over, I know I'd be devastated by having to go through such a complex learning curve. I'm not sure I could do that with your Canon."
By the time you finish gushing over his abilities with hid Canon, he'll be convinced that his camera is just as good as yours and he will have gotten a gentle reminder that learning curves can be complex. Good Luck!

Ask her this: Take two painters, give one brand of a brush to one painter and another brand to another painter. Who would paint better?

show quote)
Now that is an unfair test, I do hand lettering and without a proper quill (brush) or a red sable liner or a Grumbacher/Mack striper/dagger (for pin striping), not like the ones you buy at a hobby shop or hardware store ... I could not come close to selling my work let alone show it.
quote=wlgoode quote=fotographer My husbands cous... (

Ok, Ok, fair enough. So give one a Grumbacher and one a Robert Simmons brush (two pro brands). I'm an artist, painter too. It ain't the brush, it's the hand holding the brush.
Or give one a set of Prismacolor and the other a set of Caran D' Arch colored pencils, who would give you a better colored pencil painting?

I agree it's the hand holding the brush, also the mind controlling the hand (as I'm an artist also) seems to me you use good brushes also, why is that... if it doesn't matter....
quote=wlgoode quote=OnDSnap quote=wlgoode quot... (

Of course it matters. But equally good brushes won't determine the outcome, the artist does. Equally good cameras won't determine the outcome either.
quote=OnDSnap quote=wlgoode quote=OnDSnap quot... (

First of all youre not going to find two brushes the same, (in all aspects) just as I doubt you'll find two equally talented artists (in all respects) so this is becoming a ridiculous scenario...I.E. it doesn't matter and personally I dont care. It's one's personal preferences that may (or not) help enhance/advance the talent already within the individual ...you as an artist know you can't find, buy or beg for two like brushes even from the same manufacturer...buy 10 (supposedly the same) and you may find two with similarities, but certainly not identical. You hope to find two that are close enough knowing all well and good your favorite will someday fail you...become less responsive, no longer has that feel you once trusted would be there each time you picked it up... Cameras on the other hand can be more easy made to an exacting likeness as the next, probably even identical in any perceptual way so that bench marking 2 alike should prove to be (I would think) more likely than finding two brushes that even feel the same, let alone cast the same result even from the same artist. Some of my brushes are over 35 years old and I still use them today, yet over time they start to feel different, and knowing it's time to start hunting for a replacement, which can be a daunting task...unlike a camera.

Ok, maybe I didn't choose the best comparison, it was the first one that came to mind. However, I believe that all here knew my point was not about brushes it was about the artist. BTW, if Vincent had a different brush, would he have been a bad painter?

Tell her if she has a cannon that it's a towel and she should remove it from her camera before shooting to improve her results. :wink:
