My husbands cousin was looking at my picture on a social network site and asked me what camera I use so I told her what it is and her responce was "Nice!! Takes good pictures. I might just need a nikon instead if cannon" I don't know how to respond to it. I don't want to be mean or sound mean, ughhh. How should I respond?
That depends on whether you are shooting Nikon or Canon! ;-)

Tell her there's nothing wrong with her Canon and then ask if there's something you can help her with to see if you can improve her shots. Don't get into all that crap about "it's not the stove it's the cook".
Thank her for the compliment and let it go unless you want to risk the hurt her feelings. Pepper nailed it.

You might have said, "You're right it does take good pictures, could be an excellent idea for you to buy a Nikon, especially one of the more expensive cameras. Remember, the more money you spend the better the images."
Sign the cousin up to UHH, let's mess with her head...

So, it's alright for her to hurt your feelings with a misconception, but not alright for you to hurt her feelings with a truth?
Why not ask to borrow her camera one day and show her what it can do?
I think you should be honest about it rather than let someone denigrate what you do.
Maybe you could just print this thread out and leave it on the table when she comes around?
If you want to take better pictures get better looking friends and family. This is what I tell friends....and family.
My response would be...."everyone needs.a.backup camera".
