Yes, I use a Canon EF 500mm f4 lens all the time. On small fast flying birds I hand hold and on larger birds I use a tripod.
Don't push yourself, Sue. Get as good as you can with the equipment you already have. When you no longer have to push for good results, THEN move on to a long prime if you still want to. For now, the lenses you have will perform as well as you can.
I'm a Canon shooter and use the 300mm F4.0L IS and the 400mm F5.6L lenses for photographing birds in flight on my Canon 7D bodies.

I use a Canon 400mm F2.8 IS, often with Canon 2X expander.
thanks for the reply have a lot to learn with photography and this sight has a wealth of information!
There is no question that a zoom is better for self cropping in camera ! There also is no question that primes have better IQ. I use BOTH depending on conditions - I go to 420mm with zoom and 600mm with prime.
I sometimes use a prime 500 f4.5 for bird photograph.I can use a 2x tele-extender with this lens

yes a Nikon 500mm F:4 with a 1.4 convertor attached all the time. Photographing birds takes alot of patience and practice practice practice. There are those days I wonder why and darn near pull my hair out as to why I am doing this. Only one part of my passion for the birds inherited from my grand parents. Once you walk out that door everything counts subject wise which builds your stock photos. There less exspensive lens to invest into that will do the same type of work. The 300-400- 500 & 600mm lens are known to cause divorce. If you look at the price tag you will never buy it, look at the dream lens as a investment and how much am I realy going to use this big lens, you will somehow find a way to fund your lens. Bigger better paint brushes is what they are. I have no regrets on mine.

wcuster and Davedham,
I'm sold on the lens, Nikon 300mm, now I have to rent one and see if I can handle it and to see if I want it hanging around my neck or across my shoulder for any length of time.
Fergus....Check with SwampGator on whether or not he uses a tripod with that. His focus is spot on and he uses a 1.4x with that as well. Phil is always glad to answer pm's.

Check it out if you want to see how it works out.
Phil,
I did go to your blog. It is a wonderful blog; very well organized and easy to move around in, and the photos are excellent. I know you deserve all the kudos for the photos but I've got to ask, did you make your own blog or did someone else set it up for you? Not that it makes any difference but I'm just curious how deep your talents go.
I also have a question about your camera and lens; when you have your big 300mm on do you always use a tripod for everything but panning? And I've got to do a lot of practicing with my monopod to be ready to us it in the field. So much to learn!

Nice eagle shots Hoss ! You must have young muscles and work out... I have the same setup only mine NEVER comes off the Monopod ! ----See below. ...........One thing I will also throw out and that is that a 300mm lens has the ability to focus quicker than a 400 or 500 because of the shorter physical distance the elements have to move.

I love my 300 2.8 on a 50D.
I took this one by surprise as it came out of nowhere from my left.
